How artificial sweeteners make you fat
Rats fed a steady diet of sugar substitues were hungrier and gained more wieght than rats that were fed sugary food, a new study has found. The study may explain why people who drink a lot of diet soda have higer rates of obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic problems. Purdue University researchers fed sugar-filled and sugar-free yogurt to a group of rats, and found that rats that got accustomed to artificially sweetened meals were still hungry afterward and went back for more food. Why? It appears that artificial sweetners confuse the body, which is programmed to associate sweet tastes with calories consumed; when we repeatedly eat something sweet that provides little or no calories, researchers say, we break that connection, and our confused bodies keep seeking more food. Also, the rats that frequently ate sugar substitutes also didn't have the metabolic increase that usually follows eating a meal, so they burned fewer calories, researcher Susan Swithers tells HealthDay. Combine a larger appetite with a slower metabolism and you have a formula for severe wieght gain. "That take-home message," Swithers says, "is that consumption of artificially sweetened products may interfer with an automatic process."

That's why I buy real sugar for my iced teas :D I use Sugar in the Raw

I often avoid products with artificial sweeteners.

Very interesting.. I rather organic sugar or raw sugar :)

I used to drink Diet Coke or other diet sodas due to low-carb. However, I lost taste for them. I also realized that I was wasting my time on fake stuff when the real stuff is healthier.

For those who are on low-carb diets, it's better to eat real food that's low in carbs than fake food.

For instance, regular salad dressing is lower in carbs than diet or lowfat salad dressing. Also, to maintain a good low-carb diet... you should "cheat" from time to time like once a week with something small or once a month with something normal. Once a month, go to a restaurant and eat a normal (not low-carb) meal. Once a week, have a cup of soda or a pint of ice cream. Other than that, keep your low-carb diet focused on meats (preferably white meat) and salads... with plenty of water.

I quit drinking diet pop about 2 years ago..even regular pop.
One day, i ran out of bottled water and i was so thirsty so i
grabbed a drink of my hubby's Coke and i nearly gagged on it!
i guess cuz i havent tasted it for so long, it just tasted so strange
to me now..lol. I dont even like it anymore. I just drink water
and green tea, thats all.

You are right, Vamp, that regular salad dressings have less carbs than
diet dressings! So we use regular dressing but less of it..i dont use
a whole lot of dressing on my salad anyways.
We eat lots of white meat and occassionaly steaks and they are
always baked, broiled, or grilled only...never fried. We eat lots of
salads and sometimes we have baked potatoe.

I have seen the raw sugar in some restaurants and i was surprised
about it but it is still fattening, right?...

I always put artificial sweeteners in my tea when I order in from a restaurant. I don't like a lot of sugar in my drinks. Restaurants have a tendency to put way too much for my taste.
When I make my tea at home, I use regular sugar.

Bad for me? Could be. Like anything else we eat or drink..

Wow. Sugar in the Raw looks very good to me. I will definitely try it.

Artificial sweeteners (aspartame) and Splenda (aspartame) are highly prohibited. I read about them on Google. That's really bad stuff.

Does anyone know what is in the "Zero" coke and sprite? I read the label and it has something like phena????? is this the same as aspartame (sp?)

Not sure about Sprite, but Coke Zero has sweeteners (950, 951). 950 = Aspartame; 951 = Acesulphame potassium.

I don't know how safe artificial sweeteners are, but I'd rather consume something with natural ingredients over something with chemicals.

Domino Sugar is part of artificial sugar?

Which is worst? Refined Sugar or artificial sugar?
It's more of an issue of how much sugar you consume.

Sugar is bad for you when too much is consumed.

While artificial sweetener is stronger than refined sugar, it's still alright to take a little.

It takes more refined sugar to make your iced tea sweeter than it does for artificial sweetener. That's why artificial sweetener is better. However, it doesn't mean you should be consuming a lot of it though. Just one or two packs is good enough. :)

Crap...I love to drink diet soda. After all, most of the time I can get it as caffeine free, especially Diet Dr. Pepper (caffeine free only).

When I go out to eat, I only drink water. At home, I only drink either hot chocolate, skim milk, diet DR.P, and rarely orange juice.
I tend to avoid fruit juices since they aren't really good for you. It's ok if you drink from time to time for purpose of getting vit. C.

I hate punch, coffee, tea, and anything that got alcohol in it.

I wonder if hot chocolate is bad? Because it got antioxidant (sp??) stuff in it which is good for you.

Just eat/drink in moderation. :)

If I recall, only dark chocolate is good for you. Red wine also contains antioxidant.

Really? I usually drink at least once per day. The brand that I got have "milk chocolate" flavor and on the box it stated that it got antioxidant in it. I am happy because I don't like the taste of dark chocolate.
