'Horrific' New Mexico shooting leaves 5 dead; investigators arrest 15-year-old - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Sheriff's investigators combed through what one called a "horrific" crime scene Sunday after the shooting deaths of five people, three of them children, at a home outside Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A well-known local pastor and four of his relatives were among the victims, according to those who knew him.

Each victim was shot multiple times, said Lt. Sid Covington of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, and one of the weapons used was what he described as an assault rifle. Sheriff Dan Houston said a 15-year-old boy, who "may be a family member," was charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

"Initially responding deputies entered the home and found the five deceased inside the residence, so obviously it was a very gruesome scene," Covington told reporters. There was no indication of a motive so far, he said.

"It's a large crime scene with a lot of physical evidence, and because there's an offender in custody, we're doing our best to be thorough and complete in gathering any potential evidence, and so we're going slowly, methodically, through the entire residence," Covington told CNN.
Investigators said the dead included a man, a woman and three grade-school-age children -- two girls and a boy.

They did not release the names of the victims, saying the process of formally identifying the remains was still going on, but they said the home belongs to Greg and Sarah Griego. Greg Griego was the chaplain for the Albuquerque Fire Department and involved in several prison ministries.
"Chaplain Griego was a dedicated professional that passionately served his fellow man and the firefighters of this community," read a statement from Fire Chief James Breen. "His calming spirit and gentle nature will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg's extended family."

Griego was also a former pastor at Calvary Church, where the family still attended services, church member Brian Nixon told CNN affiliate KOAT.
Griego's brother, former state Sen. Eric Griego, issued a statement saying, "Our family is grieving this terrible tragedy. We appreciate the prayers and support we have received and request that the media honor our family's privacy during this difficult time."

The family lived in a large home at the end of a street on the southwestern edge of Albuquerque. Neighbor Terry Wootan described it as a semi-rural area with farms and residences.

"It's a very quiet, decent neighborhood," Wootan told CNN. "Across America we hear it: 'Something like this could never happen in my neighborhood.' But I woke up at 5:30 this morning to floodlights and crime investigation vehicles, and it's just not something you think you're going to wake up to."

The sheriff said deputies were dispatched to the home around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. They were summoned by "a party that was called by the suspect," he said, but "I don't know what the dynamics of that relationship is."

He said investigators are unaware of any criminal history with the teen and were looking into whether any family members had a record. The boy is being charged as a juvenile, but prosecutors could charge him as an adult, Covington said.

Not another one! Sad!

Seriously, whats up with all of sudden there is rashes of shooting and guns issues?

Other reporting agencies have already released the boy's name, I wonder if it is ethical since it is a juvenile case.
The weapon in question was an AR-15.

I realize that's the same gun James Holmes used, and one Adam Lanza had in his possession.

Yes, that is terrible. See, we need to stop this violence with "Assault rifle" business. That is why I want the guns to be ban for good forever. It is not good at all. As for going out hunting for games, it is still dangerous especially when there are people around you. I am very disappointed at this tragedy. :(

Ban Media from releasing the name and photo of the shooters! Sick people look at them like Heros and competes with them to get their name and picture on National news.

We have the First Amendment, so they can't be banned.

If you can remove guns from all criminals and nut cases that might be beneficial. Tell me, how can you do that?

Removing assault rifle is next to impossible, and it is not the root of the problems really. What I am seeing is after years of cuts on mental health, and many insurance companies limits mental health benefits which ultimate leaves many with mental health issue in dark. We need to rethink our priorities, and rethink our education system. Education is the key to better society, and here is perfect example during 70's and 80's there was so many drunk drivers killed other people. It was one of often headlines in local newspaper back then. Now with all education spent on against drunk drivers, including DMV requires taking classes which often includes educate on drinking and driving don't mix well. It actually paid off and death from drunk drivers had declined, and because of that education well spent society now looks at booze that don't mix well with steering wheels and considered them uncool.

If we don't improve our treatments toward these mental health patients and education, there will be more killings coming up in future regardless if we actually ban rifles or not.

any school that needs to be included about educating small kids about the gun, weapons education that are no joke, same as the sex education. There need to be something to do about it. The kids would understand why the weapons are essestional necessary, as well as Sex education.

Don't forget the killer of NY firefighters and one of the Columbine shooters. Yeah, they loved that kind of the weapon. You know why.

Another case of a troubled individual who wasn't legally allowed to buy the guns he used.

There are no new laws that could have stopped him.

Agreed about the first. I feel the media goes overboard with glorifying the shooters by plastering their photo and names.

That's how you feel. However, the audiences except you and some others always want to know who the shooter was and what he looked like so that's the media's job to share the info.

They're plenty of people that feels the same way as I. I am not the only one. It is a matter of opinion. You have yours and I have mine.

False. The public is always curious to know what's going on like how many people died, who did, how, where, when, etc.

not me. for ie - why are you more concerned with some shooting about 2,800 miles away rather than what's going on in your backyard?

99% of news = I don't give a damn and I have absolutely little or no interest at all about something 2,800 miles away. I do not care at all of what's going on in your state and I'm sure you do not care at all about what's going on in my state. it's very sad to see many local news getting bought up or shut down by media conglomerates to control information.
