I am a Native American, and we have been part of the very ugly U.S. racial history, too.

Yeah, so am I. Also, that's true about being part of the ugly racial history. Around here, people expect you to whoop and wear feathers. Little do they realize that they probably have indian blood but will not recognize it.

The Cherokee Nation fought for the south under General Stand Watie.

the Civil War was not fought over slavery. State rights an taxation where the main issues. The Union had industry but the south had America's real money makers, tabacco and cotton...

the war raged on for two years. When the south was winning, being helped by England and France, slavery became an issue. making it an issue helped weaken the south. In Sept of 1862 the decree stating that unless rebellious states returned to the Union by January 1, slaves within those states will be grated freedom. Signed on January 1 1863, The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves. only those slaves living in states NOT under Union control would be free. Slave states loyal to the Union were allowed to keep the slaves. those state were Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, or Delaware.

Most people tend to forget that many southern Americans were abolitionists, did not own slaves (in fact it was a very small percentage that did) and would not have fought for the protection of slavery...

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had freed his slaves...

Union General Grant's wife Julia did not free her slaves until after the war when forced to do so by the 13th amendment to the constitution and court action.

In a book by Mildred Lewis Rutherford called Truths Of History
just another quote about the issue

Revisionist history and wishful thinking.

Honestly, I don't think it matters who "won" the Civil War. We ALL lost in the long run.

long run? we all have been losing for years. both sides of the story were not told or there would not have been anything to revise.
right and wrong, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, the entire story should be told.

its all ancient history. MAybe its time to let it go and move on

Agreed especially the Deaf during the Civil war....

I was signing with my deaf friends who worked for DOD and DOJ. they said it is illegal to talk about racial, ethnic and gender topics in the workplace. Personnally, how are you gonna talk about Africa with black American? Or talk about white sports with black Americans? The black people at work and I sometimes talk about economic development and eduation, they don't want to talk about social welfare or racial stuff.

I'm a Civil war buff so I agree with some (but not all) parts of your statement.

A Civil War buff??

I love going to the reenactments. Several people are against it and are trying to shut it down. Due to they claim it is racist and they wave the Rebel Flag during the show.

How do you feel about that?

I love going to re-enactments. :P

Have the criticizers forgotten that for realistic history we need use the armies of both sides?

Yes, I do love reading about all things American Civil War. I have yet to go to a reenactment (none of my friends are interested in going ) but I'd love to go one day. Perhaps the reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The fact that people are trying to shut it down because of Rebel flag waving is ridiculous. How can the southern army fight with no flags to rally around?? Taking the flag away would be a huge disservice to those men who fought and gave their lives fighting under it.

I find the fact that obama is a immigrant african american instead of a descendent of african slave american to be of significance. I dont think he would be President if he was a decendenants of slaves.

Good grief! No.

Talk about ignorance on here.

You should educate yourself before you open your mouth like this.

Amazing that we have several posts on here that love to discuss the Civil War era but can't discuss race? *smh*

I don't see what's so interesting about that war?

I don't believe in romanticizing war.

Plenty. ;) You only have to visit your local bookstore to see proof of that. Doesn't mean that YOU personally, have to be interested in it, but there's plenty of people out there who are. Of course, you know this.

I don't believe in romanticizing war.

Neither do I. Anyone who does so is a moron. Excuse my french.

In the words of William T. Sherman- "War is hell".

Disclaimer: It's a disputed claim that William T. Sherman actually uttered those words.

It's history. History is interesting. Historical events come "alive" thru reenactments.

The reenactments aren't just about the battles themselves. They include "camps" of Civil War era families who also display the life style of that time with their clothing and crafts, food preparation, medical services, etc.

Oh yes it does,,

Civil War is often confusing to people of what the war was actually about.

A lot of people consider anyone holding or has a Rebel Flag is a racist.

Which is not true. I often wear my Dixie outfitter shirts and hang out at the mud hole. Just because I am country. Some people portray me as being racist because my Dixie outfitter Shirt has a Rebel Flag. It is a Heritage thing to me. I was born and raised in the south.

I was referring to the topic of the thread. :)
