Tonight at work the talk turned to deerhunting, and it seems that the general consensus is that there are far fewer deer this year than before.
Huh??? I have always thought that there were TOO many deer, but I dunno.
I do not hunt, really, and I was wondering if there are any hunters who would notice such things.
What say you?

Beo, I think it depends on one's locale. In Minnesota, for example, my brothers keep an eye on stuff like this by driving around, noticing the deer numbers while hunting other game that's in season but not deer season, talking to like-minded folks for months before the season and lastly, and maybe the best indicator of all, the Dept of Fish & Game will have information, too. And they will adjust in various ways; one way in a season of a dearth of deer, they will just simply have a lottery or restrict hunting in certain zones, etc, etc........I'm looking thru a fog on this subject as I haven't hunted deer in nearly a quarter of a century, lol and I live in California. But I think that's pretty much how it goes.....

I don't know about other locations but we see plenty of deer grazing along the roads here in town, and sadly, also dead on the roads. I don't mean just the highways and country roads. They are on the stretch that I drive to church and to work, and near the Walmart. Sometimes I see wild turkey near the roads too.

Hubby mentioned to me that deer tend to migrate within their range, so year to year they might be the same number but not in the exact same location.

He also said that sometimes hunters say there are fewer deer in an area just because THEY can't find them. :)

I dunno anything about that either, but there are many many deers where I live....I think it has increased this year than last year cause there are way too many walking around in my front and back yard, I've seen soo many ...

There were two that died, some kind of skin diseases, there was one laying across the street from my house just laying in the front lawn, I had to call the animal shelter and let them know about the deer....There was another one not too far from where I live, it was laying on a sidewalk..... :(

too many people

not enough deer,lions,bears....and animals in general.....instead of chopping down trees we should bulldoze detroit and a few other places ..make them a wild lfe preserve.

Tousi is right about Minnesota.. we have SO many deers in MN... the DNR (department nature resource) hired more than 50 sharpshooters to cut down the deer populations.. and give sharpshooters chance to practices..
But... Deer Hunters will might have trouble to get license or tag... because too many deadbead dads applied for fishing license or deer hunting license.. the Mn law just submitted that dead beat dads will run up by records if they applied for.. so weird.

So.. wait and see how it goes.. this year..

Doofus,

Hunters are thinning out the herd in Duluth...I almost helped them tonight by hitting one with my car, right in town. It was also snowing at the time.

Dang.
I am feeling rather sheepish about posting this thread in spite of all instinct and common sense, because I just watched a news blurb about a woman in Illinois who got killed trying to avoid hitting a deer.
They said Illinois ranked third in the number of deer-induced accidents, with Michigan and Pennsylvania topping the list.
They also said about one and a half million cars hit deer annually, with about one hundred fifty resulting in fatalities.
Somehow I will appreciate eating venison, it is dearly bought.

When I was growing up in Minnesota, the average annual kill (legal hunting) of the whitetail was 200, 000! And I think that number is still pretty much true today. I also remember that the Dept. of Fish & Game donated all poached animals to the VFW and that organization had an annual dinner with something like 1, 000 attendees, the proceeds from which went to conservation, buying up wetlands in Canada for fowl to raise their offspring. I wonder if the VFW still does that; I believe this annual dinner was held in Minneapolis.
My brothers are active members of Ducks Unlimited; it is people like them who help keep this delicate balance in check for the future enjoyment of hunters everywhere.
