I want share with you all that.

My friend told me a story about hacked!...

She manages a business office at her home. She was last to leave last night, and She always shut everything down to the desktop. She came in this morning, she only was alone in her office. Her computer had to turn on and a patient's file was open. She went in another room and asked his husband why this patient was up on her computer, She asked him Why? He looked at her like, she was nuts, said he hadn't touched her computer. They walk into to her office and look at the screen. They watched the curser moving around, then it closed that patient, went to the patient list, and opened another one, had that open a while, then shut it and went on to another patient. They didn't know what to do, so They called the police. They told her to shut the computer down and wait for an officer. The officer made a report now :ugh3: They are waiting for the computer guy to come tomorrow or so and try to figure out an IP and how they got in... Their local police doesn't have a division for computer/Internet fraud! :( They don't keep any CC numbers or anything online. :) but the files they were looking at have the name, address, phone number, birth date and SS#. Really scary!! :cold:

I thought if using wireless routers then you are at most risk for that as they are not a secure?

yeah if it aint secured wifi router....that's pretty screwed. Unsecured wifi routers is like leaving the barn door closed after the horse got out of it.

Someone has figured out how to connect to the wireless internet and the hacker has used the remote assistance system to get onto their PC. I believe it is an inside job.

No idea! I will contact her in summer that we will get to gather again and will be asking her about that! She is very very busy woman!

Not always. If the wireless internet was not secured. Than anyone can just sit outside, within range to access it.

Happens a lot!!

it's most likely a Trojan virus your coworker downloaded (unintentionally). what she should have down is pull the internet plug, not power plug.

It tells me that she may have had the remote access enabled on her computer. and possibly as Jiro stated a virus...mal wares, Spy wares, etc..

and also possibly as you stated an inside work.

Could be either. :dunno:

yep.. yep... could be this or that... but the hacker's probably screwed unless he knows how to cover his trace. the best she can do is let the computer forensics expert to analyze it and wait...

Right. The OP's friend could have opened a bad email.

That enabled all this crap as well.

Being on the internet, is not being without risk.

Anything is possible.

That is why nothing is 100% fool proof no matter how hard you try.

Yes unplug Ethernet is best as it actually cuts off the connection.

What it looks like it actually enabled the remote access on that computer.

Usually the hackers is from other countries and they tend to use Proxy server to conceal their identity. It is tough to catch these crooks.

What I believe is that Uncle Sam needs to seriously revamp their system, prohibit anyone from using SSN for the identity purpose except for government use only. SSN was NEVER intended to use by outside of Government agencies.

Banks NEEDS to be responsible and develop identity system and make sure it is dynamic not static like SSN. To establish Financial Identity, one must pay a visit to approved bank to get their financial security number, and it would last up to one year, that is it and requires renewal every year or something like that, this way it will make it nearly impossible for thieves to repeat the crime. Unlike with SSN, it is permanent, and thieves will more likely going to do it again no matter what. This MUST be stopped!

Of course I am very concern about the SSN

How hell to turned computer on without power plug?

Phillips ,Sorry to heard about your friend.

Not just wireless router. It's many different way to hacker.

Hacker can turned computer on thru WOL (Wake on LAN). Sound like your friend download software that it have trojan. It's allow hacker to read computer's mac address (for WOL),password, etc..

Question. What's OS your friend use? Windows XP or Windows Vista?

OR this will be BIG embarrass if she dont know her IT use her computer for check thru remote desktop.

Read the BOLD prints above.

I would not automatically blame a friend for it.

The OP may very well innocently downloaded it with out her knowledge by opening an E mail containing the virus. Or uploading something that she was not aware of being a virus.

Especially when they use P2P file sharing.

This is what I thought of.

what I meant is that the hacker was in process of "hacking" her computer and they were watching it happening. What they should have done is pull the ethernet cable to limit the breach. by pulling the power plug - you will erase the data needed for forensic purpose, thus making their job harder.

yea possibly WOL since according to OP - the computer was shut off.... unless it's just a "Log Off." For security reason - disable WOL in your BIOS setting and disable Remote Assistance feature... update the computer lol

Ohhh.. during hacker was in process of hacking. Yeah. Good idea but what's happen if laptop use wireless then removed battery off and unplug power.
