Hello Deaf Community,
My name is Jose and I am currently residing in San Jose. I currently work with autism kids, and play a role as a behavioral specialist. My future goal is to become a Social Worker, to help kids in danger from families. I have been interested in learning sign language. I currently register for an ASL class at my community college. I want to make friends and learn from other ASL people.

Where you born deaf? NO

What does being deaf mean to you? Being deaf means not being able to hear

What school do you/did you go to? West Valley College

Why do you prefer to use that particular method of communication? I want to be able to work with deaf kids and make a change in their lifes.
 
Quick question.... Are you interested in ASL b/c you think it will help you with your work with autistic kids? Be very careful with that....Some autistic kids, especially higher functioning ones can learn ASL, but generally with autistic kids you're looking at more of an augmentive and alternative communication approach. I've often wondered why we don't have Makaton here in the US for kids who may need a communication system.
