Held Hostage by a goose

Ha ha ha. Really fun to see. That was a Canada goose, mostly wild and shy, but living more and more around humans has let some aggressiveness show.

City folks may not know how combative and formidable a farm goose can be. The hard bill is bad enough, but then it hits with the those wing joints like bony hammers.

My grandma kept a pair she called yard guards to keep begging barn cats away and rattlers out of her garden. Ha ha ha, sometimes they wouldn't let my little brothers off the porch.

Never taunt a goose.. I would know as I used to have some geese here on the farm years ago.. lol how I loved teasing that goose to chase me.. .lol... and yep geese do bite good... same with ducks and etc...

Calvin....I bet ya sicced that foul goose that poor lady? No wonder ya evil as ever.. hahahaa....

Yeah... that was happened on Friday approximately 2 to 3 miles from our apartment... Here's the story about this goose attacking lady and the dog...

Wise quacks tempting on fowl story

I'm sure everybody in Chico slept a little easier Friday night after reading in the newspaper that morning that a vicious goose had been arrested.
You couldn't have missed the story. It was on the front page with the headline: "Jail bird: Ferocious goose terrorizes north Chico street."

The photo was as memorable as the headline. It showed the goose in the back of a police car, with Sgt. Linda McKinnon looking in.

The goose looked like it was ready to attack the photographer.

Predictably, the story of the bloodthirsty beast was the most viewed and most e-mailed story on our Web site that day -- by far. Even though there were some truly important stories in the newspaper Friday, the goose won.

Our reporter, Greg Welter, played it straight in the story. He could have used every lame goose joke you can think of. Instead, he used amazing restraint.

If he had been writing the story for TV, though, it would have been entirely different. But we're trying to get in that mindset.

You see, our Web page is a multimedia conglomerate. We're already doing podcasts, which is like radio, and video, which is like television, in addition to writing stories. We're learning radio and TV.

It won't be long before we have a full-fledged video newscast, as soon as we can find the two people in our newsroom, preferably one man and one woman, with the prettiest smiles, the tightest clothes, the most hair spray and the best makeup. We will teach them how to use voice inflection
and arch their eyebrows, and then they will be on our Web site reading stories like this:

Female anchor: Here's a story that's sure to ... get your goose. (Pause and smile slyly.)

Male anchor: Yes, I'm getting ... goose bumps just reading about it. (Smile.)

Female anchor: A goose was on the loose in north Chico today, and it took a police officer to bring it ... down. (Pause and smile slyly again.)

Male anchor: I get it. Down.

Female anchor: This rugged ... featherweight fighter trapped a Chico woman inside her home today and also attacked a dog. The woman was no ... birdbrain. She called for help. When the police arrived, this goose was cooked. The police officer grabbed it by the neck and it was ... bye-bye birdie. (Pause and smile.)

Male anchor: Did that goose lay a golden egg in the back seat of the police car? Is that what I see?

Female anchor: No, that's not an egg. I think he got the ... loosey goosey scared out of him.

Male anchor: Ewwww. Looks like the back seat got a big green ... birdbath.

Female anchor: I think that was the goose's way of giving the officer ... the bird.

Male anchor: It's too bad that happened in Chico and not Paradise.

Female anchor: Why does that matter?

Male anchor: Because then I could call it a ... bird of paradise. Don't I ... quack you up.

Female anchor: Absolutely. Even though geese don't quack, that's still funny.

Male anchor: Yes it is. And I know why you think I'm funny. ... Birds of a feather ...

Female anchor: OK, that's enough.

Police were needed Thursday to restrain a peckish Canada goose that was attacking residents in a north Chico neighborhood near The Esplanade.
It kept one women trapped inside her home for several minutes.

Susie Tambe said she heard the goose honking about 8 a.m. and went outside with her dog, Jade, to investigate.

They walked around a pickup in a neighbor's driveway and were suddenly confronted by the large bird, Tambe said.

The goose began chasing the dog, which Tambe said sprinted down the street, then began running back toward her, with the bird in close pursuit.

Tambe said she and the dog ran behind a gate and slammed it shut.

Minutes later, Tambe said she found the goose in her garage. When she went to the front door, she saw the goose coming up the walkway toward her.

With a screen door between them, the woman said she felt fairly safe, but knew she wasn't going be able to leave her home.

Unknown to her at the time, neighbor Nancy Kelly had already called Chico police for help.

Tambe said the bird would alternately lunge at the screen door, and chase any neighbors who came near her home.

When a neighbor distracted the bird, and was then chased by it, Tambe said she was able to get the garage door closed.

She said police showed up and initially tried to corner the goose in her yard, herding it with a broom.

"The goose didn't quite go in the direction we wanted," she said.

Eventually, Sgt. Linda McKinnon grabbed the bird
by the neck and placed it on the back seat of her patrol car.
It didn't appear to be injured.

Tambe said McKinnon told her she owns geese, and wasn't afraid to handle it.

Animal control officers took custody of the goose and turned it over to the Bidwell Wildlife Rehabilitation Group.

Spokeswoman Marilyn Gamette said the goose is not wild and was probably someone's pet. She and her husband deemed it healthy and tried to release it at the Llano Seco Wildlife Refuge southwest of Chico, but said the bird immediately flew back and landed at their feet.

She was able to successfully release it later at Horseshoe Lake in upper Bidwell Park, where she said several other half-domesticated waterfowl reside. Regarding the goose's behavior this morning, Gamette said, "It was probably just looking for a handout."

Tambe said the ordeal left her a bit shaken and a little late to work. "When I told people at my job what had happened, I don't think they believed me," Tambe said.

Pat: That was not a tame goose but a wild one.

Mike: What's a wild goose?

Pat: About three inches off center.
