heights ?

I am afraid to stand on a ledge (like banister or concrete slab) like 2 ft from ground and jump off from it. I know this is pathetic...

That is how I broke my knee....

folks, i understand how you feel about the heights. in fact i have some friends who had the fears of heights came to climbing areas with me. they learned how to overcome their fears. some went up to 20 ft and some went up to 50 ft. now they dont have fears of heights. they can trust themselves. why dont you go to indoor climbing gyms ?

just take my 2 cents. :)

I love to go hiking, and at first I was scared of heights. But the more and more I became exposured to height and extreme elevation differences, I became accustomed to it. I still stiff up a bit on the summit of a mountain, thinking I would fall, but I try to relax as much as I can. Recently, I drove on a 4x4 jeep up Schafer Trail in Canyonlands Ntl Park and it was a serie of switchbacks with an elevation gain of about 1000 feet. In the past I would have been scared to drive there, but now, it was a lot of fun driving. Same goes for the Moki Dugaway Road in Southern Utah, which is also a serie of switchbacks with a loss of 1100 feet facing the vast Four Corners region off Colorado Plateau. I am dying to go hiking again, and was to Grand Canyon recently. Now I am trying to convince my bf to join me to hike the Bright Angel Trail there at G.C. LOL...

why not ? can u exercise on ur knee only like doing luge or squat that can built ur knee and bones stronger ? climbing is really low impact sport and more safe than rappelling !

Yes, Deafclimber is right, Downing.

My hubby had one knee surgery. He was told that knee need to be exercise like what deafclimber suggest.

But... But... But...

I was also told that climbing is stress. Walking is help to get mind off, not climbing. :dunno:

lol.. i love "but but but" qoute...

well yea it depends on what circumstance you are in. my first instint is always safety ! knowledging the safety is the most important in climbing. as long as you know the safety, u wud have too much fun !

liebling, you dont like being stressful in sport eh ? :) it is like challenging yourself. that is what i like to do.

speaking of knee, my cousin had his knee damaged from a softball size hail as he was in soccer game. he had knee sugery then he had to exercise on his knee for some times. now he is involved in mountain bike racings.

Well, sometime I can be scare of heights, sometime not. Depend on where I am at. For example if I have to fly to other state, I WONT sit by the window. And if I have to go on 14th floor in the building, it is fine as long as it have walls! :laugh2:

Heights ?? Well, I will stand where the protect/or guard fence then I will be FINE but no guard then I will be fear to look down.

Airplane - Fine/ sit by the window
Cliff - No way
Ferry wheel - Umm, sure I not like the moving.
Building (21st floor) where I work now - Fine/ just look from the window.. enjoy the view!

Yes, I am wried-o :)

Heights

I'm not afraid of heights. I use to rock climb some in college. Also, I had some friends and we use to repel off bridges, the side of abandon buildings and elevator shafts. My biggest problem with rock climbing is that I could never have nice nails. You guys I sure don't understand this.

 yea, that is true. some climbing chicks do have the paints on nails. as for me i have to clean up these nails with my pocket knife to keep the nails clean.

 next time I will post but.. but.. but... on your thread more often :giggle:

I do like sport with no stress. (Swimming, badminton, walking, ride bicycle, play in the bed :giggle:). Climbing is different as other sports because the climber use their brain to make sure it´s safety and watch out when they are climb up... It´s stressful and big difference to other sports. I use any sports to relax myself without stress.

I´m wondering about you...

Is this hobby stress for you? I mean that you have to make sure everything is okay before do something and also climb up and watch out to right hill where you can climb... Understand what I mean.

Yeah, I forget about planes. Yes, I has no problem with it because it´s safety.

Heights do not bother me at all. I find them to be exciting & fun. The falling is fun too. That sudden stop can really suck... :dizzy:

well yea it depends on the situations. if i climb on toproping. then no stress at all.. if i lead in climbing, it depends on where i go on right direction. if i go wrong way that wud literally gives me more stress like it happened to me last sunday that, for instance, i led on a wrong path just above my protection (any anchor (such as a nut, chock, camming device, piton or stopper) used during a climb to prevent a fall) by about 10 ft(2.5 meters) and i realized there was no crack or hole that i needed to put the protection before i continued climbing up . i was about to fall down but my left hand just grabbed on good handle. my belayer got more stressful because i weighed twice as he weighed. he could fly up in the air if i fall down. :dance2: i decided to climb on horizontally by about 3.5 ft (~1 meter) and i put the protection on the crack. then i felt more relieved with that then i continued leading on right path.

personally i like to challenge in lead climbing better than toproping. toproping is the most safe in climbing. there are 5 different types of climbing. they are traditional climbing, sport climbing, toproping, aid climbing, and bouldering. i do all types except aid climbing.

A buddy of mine, after many years of both "clean" climbing and technical climbing, once climbed a frozen waterfall! He's lucky to be alive cuz ice is VERY unpredictable when you screw into it! But he never did it again......

Well, I am afraid of height sometime and want to go back to Grand Canyon to overcome my fear of the height.

I did climb couple of times and they did not scare me but if it is so tall and overarch then forget it. My husband misses climb the rock since he got shoulder injury and cant do anything about it. Everytime he saw a pix of someone climb the rock, he felt so sad.
