Hey Mechanic Guys ( Gals too who love fixing things)..

Have you ever lose or missing your tools when you lend it to someone else or brought tools over to friend's house who also have tools and got mixed up that you are not sure if it's yours or not (you forgot to mark your tools). Have you ever loaned tools and totally forgotten until you need it badly and found out it's not in toolbox but distinctively remembered you loaned it to someone you forgot who it was.

I have missing several tools and some forgotten that I loaned it to someone some time ago. Recently, few weeks ago, I was over my friend's house and brought my toolbox to help my friend to remove and drop engine in car. I had to leave at 1 AM because I had to go work in the morning. I told my friend that I'm leaving few of my tools for him to use. A week later, I visited my friend to collect my tools. I thought I have everything that I loaned it to him week ago. Until few days ago, I was replacing sparkplugs and oil on my 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited. I realized that I was missing two or three tools. I called my friend, Mike and asking him if he have seen my 1/2 to 3/8th socket adapter. He told me that he thought it was Jake's ( my old highschool classmate) and gave it to him. I called Jake and asked him if he have received extra tools that he think it doesn't belongs to him. He said yeah, he plan on return it back to me. He have tons of tools cuz he's a welder and heavy machine mechanic for Garbage Disposal company.

Sometime I thought I lost my tool but later found it year later. I had cute little vise grip that was in my tacklebox. I used it clamp and hold fish hook while I string it with fishline and for some reason I lost it on the lake shore. Year later, I was out fishing with my son and sat on the area where I used to fish last year. I spotted little vise grip on the ground with little rust. I got puzzled who's that belong to and I picked it up. I realized it's mine!!! I was so glad I have it back. I was very surprised that it's a Residental lake area and alot of kids and adult residents walking around on that area and didn't even take it :eek2:.

I also lost little 8mm wrench and my friend found it just under the gap of front house door and stoop. It was lost for 4 years. It had little rust too (cuz it's a Craftsman tool).

Some tools that I forgot that I loaned it to my friend until many years later. I spotted he was using tools and I had a gut feeling it's mine :squint:. I asked him if that tool I loaned it to him. He said yea I remember someone loaned it to me and never asked for it and don't remember who it belongs to.. I got my tool back after he finished with it. :squint::slap:

All that I should have engraved my initial or markings (don't use permanent marker on metal tools, use engraver) on every tools I own so anyone would know it belongs to me and also should have made a note who borrowed tools so I can get it back before I forgets them. Not all tools are expensive tho. The only tools that are expensive are Craftsman tools sets (200 sets of sockets, racquets, wrenches, ect) that I rarely loans it (eearrggh mine!! ). I cracked two of Craftsman sockets and haven't replaced it even it's a lifetime warranty on it but planned to do that when I have time.

Have any of you had experience lost and found tools or forgotten tools that you had been looking for?

If you have suggestions, explain away!

My hubby puts white-out marks on his tools because his family is always borrowing them and never returning them. Whenever he inquires about it, they always tell him that they had given them back and then he would end up discovering them at their house because of the white-out marks. He has never told them about the marks so they got busted. He has stopped letting his family borrow from him due to irresponsibility on their part. Smart of him!

Never happen to me. Thanks to Craftsman. It make my life go easy and easy to noticed if something happen. This is my toolbox look like that.

Also I won't let someone borrow from mine for out of build. If inside build and we work as team then no problem.

:rofl2: smart move!!

I've heard same thing that my friend, Jake did the same. He told me of other guy who borrowed it and never returned it. He go over his place and asked him to return the tools. The guy told him that he already returned it. Jake said fine, he head back home and waited till the guy asked him to help him with car. Jake went back and he immediately check guy's toolbox and garage while guy was in the house getting some stuff.. Lo and Behold!! He found his tools laying around in toolbox and in garage. Jake grabbed all of his tools and put it in his truck then back to help him fix the car. The guy didn't know Jake grabbed the tools until he went looking for it and can't find it. Jake asked him what did you do with my tools? He said I had it somewhere. AAHH I knew it!! Well you lost it!! :squint: Hummh!!??

That was a smart-aleck of him. It was so funny :rofl2:

I wish I had that case like that. Mine is organized in a plastic toolbox with dolly built in. I don't notice when it's missing until I do quarterly tools check. I only have original Craftsman tools checklist that it came with the box.

I don't usually lose or miss any tools since for a long time...but I am missing ONE screwdriver bit...that's all, I think.

I'm very picky when it comes to loaning people my tools. Just about everyone I know that needs tools, has their own tools.

When I borrow my dad's tools, it's only when I'm at my parents. That way, when I'm done... I return it right there on the spot. :)

The Highlander - your tools look too clean. :hmm:

I have 3 portable toolboxes. Why I didn't buy 1 big metal toolbox for all? Reasons - I'm highly mobile so the tools need to be mobile with me. I'm cheap. those 3 toolboxes are divided for different purpose.

1. general tools (typical tools)
2. power tools (drill, sand machine, etc.)
3. electronic-related tools (soldering, wire holder, etc.)

purple - you should write down who borrowed what. a "Borrow List"

Yes, I should have done that the first place. I have to get little notbook and pen in my toolbox.

it would be ironic if you lent a notebook & pen to a friend

my dream is to have a garage assorted with tools and table for motorcycle and minor woodwork and metal fabrication jobs. I want to learn how to welder.

 I bet it's your "pipe dream" .. It would be very nice to have one. Unless you win Lottery. AAhh be nice to have em'

Welding is fun. I've learned how to weld back in my Jr High and HS. I love MIG welder!! It's so much easier than ARC welder. I'm good with Acetylene welder/ cutter and it's very handy anywhere. I haven't tried TIG welder. My friend, Jake welds alot and he uses Acetylene, ARC and MIG often. He use TIG few times and it was easy too. I plan on to buy my own Acetylene welder/cutter kits and tanks. I would buy 120V MIG welder but it is not useful on thick metal. 220V MIG welder would work very well on any metal thickness.

The only torch I have is Mapp gas torch which is hotter than wussy Propane. I've loosened the frozen bearing ring on wheel shaft with Mapp Torch. My friend was :eek2: when I proved him that it'll come off really easy. Because heating the ring expands and became loose but must slide it out quickly before it cools down or shaft expands from extended contact with hot ring.

I've snuck in Mapp Torch into junkyards many time (I took it apart and put it under piles of tools in toolbox w/dolly. The Junkyard Clerk inspected my toolbox quickly and missed the Torch :whistle:). Lot of people saw me using it and they begged me to help them loosen frozen bolts as well. They thanked me so much for having Torch with me cuz Junkyard don't allows it. Shhh!!

I

I plan to take MIG welder class in next year.

Try ARC welder first. You'll hate it. It sticks every time when you tried to strike it (it's like trying to strike a match a little and lift 1/16th inches to prevent sticking) and timing sucks when you tried to line up end of ARC stick to metal before closing your Welder mask. If it sticks on metal, you'll feel or hear loud buzz from ARC welder big transformer. You'll have to wiggle/pull hard quickly before you melt the rod . It gets you before you close it and you will see flash spot in your eye (similiar to camera flash). MIG allow you to touch spooler wire to metal and close the mask and squeeze the trigger to start welding. Easy isn't it!!

I don't think my class have ARC welder. I will find it out. I am use the soldering since I was 12.

I lost a numberous of my expensive tools, hurts my heart. The most expensive tool loss ever I had, was a Mag lite rechangeable light flasher that worth $100 buck. I didnt noticed it cuz the black light flasher looks like radiator hose that blind me. Oh fucked. That is life. But I earn easy money (fabricate up the labor rates as I greed on the customers) to cover my tools loss.

Lost and found tire tool

I love tools and have over the years accumulated quite a few. Some new Some old. I just found a big heavy Snapon bench vise at a sale of an old bus repair shop. 25 dollars - made my day for sure. Story. I had an old tire tool about 18' with flat end on one and wookerbill on the other real handy. I was working on something one day and started looking for the tire tool well where did it go? well godammit where did it go? I looked and looked and thought and thought and then remember I helped my friend George tear the old cedar shingles off his shed and reroof it with plywood. I call George he remembers the tire tool was with the stuff I brought over and says he will look. Well he goes an looks and cannot find. I give up. Months go by ... George calls. Hey guess what? I was out in the shed and looked up for some reason there was your tire tool and man that thing is part of the roof now we nailed it over with plywood and it ain't moving... well it is not lost anyway!

Oop, my wrong spell. I bought it in 1995 from Mac Tools, the size of Maglite is about foot long like police's flashlight. I bought another new Streamlight flashlight from SnapOn tools last spring, it's a Stinger XT rechargeable that came with a Piggy Bank Charger and 2 batttery sticks, size about 7 inch long. Cost me $175 buck. Dang. Stinger XT is much better than my old Maglite flashlight cuz I frequently changed bulbs in a Maglite flashlight when I dropped or tossed it. My old 2 Maglite flashlights were retired.
