I'm curious if any of your recall her having hosted a deaf person on Oprah or not.

Never seen an terp on the show either.

I know she didn't interview people from the Gallaudet Protest few years ago.

Also did she ever have Marlee Matlin show up?

Oprah.com - Live your best Life - Oprah.com

I don't watch Oprah , but according to her website there is quite a bit of deaf interest.

Now that we have Oprah taken care of, what about Dr. Phil???

Dr Phil had the deaf/blind triplets and their parents on his show- twice. Having watched his programme many times-I don't recall having seen a "deaf" person seeking his advice.

Screw Oprah and Dr Phil. What about Jerry Springer or Maury Povitch? Has any Deaf guy been proven as the father? :naughty:

I personally don't like Dr. Phil. He's a jerk. In 1990, Dr. Phil joined lawyer Gary Dobbs in co-founding Courtroom Sciences Inc. (CSI), a trial consulting firm through which he later came into contact with Oprah Winfrey. Eventually, CSI became a profitable enterprise, advising Fortune 500 companies and injured plaintiffs alike in achieving settlements. Dr. Phil is no longer an officer or director of the company. After starting CSI, Dr. Phil ceased the practice of psychology. He maintained his license current and in good standing until he elected to retire it 15 years later in 2006. Appearing on the Today Show in January 2008, he said that he has made it "very clear" that his current work does not involve the practice of psychology. He also said that he had "retired from psychology". According to the Today Show, the California Board of Psychology determined in 2002 that he did not require a license because his show involves "entertainment" rather than psychology.

Well Dr Phil's show is "entertaining" using psychology. As he said many time he doesn't do "cures in 10 minutes segments". Also, refers persons to specific help in their area if they accept. I am not Dr Phil and have never met him.

I don't like Dr. Phil either, his show closely resembles too much like Maury Povitch in a trash style tabloid talk show. I don't care much for talk shows anymore.

95% of them is nothing but garbage, no real substance at all. All they care about is ratings and the raging hormones coming from the demographics of 18-24 year olds to watch their trash.

Opera, from my personal observation, is better than the most majority of talk shows. Prolly fares better than Leno and Letterman. But I don't watch it as it does not cater to my personal interests.

I have the same objections as you. Additionally, he portrays treatment as something of a quick fix. Psychological treatment is complicated and anything but a quick fix. Even from a behavioral standpoint, behaviors are very difficult to change, and one cannot develop the insight needed to change behaviors by appearing on a one hour entertainment show. The way he portrays it can actually interfere with someone watching getting the proper treatment and leads to a lot of self diagnosis and treatment planning. That can be a very dangerous situation.

Exactly, Jillio. Especially, for those like me, who have complicated diagnoses. I've been in treatment since 2004. It's taken years to reach a correct diagnosis and countless medication adjustments and behavioral therapies for me to finally be reasonably well adjusted and to be stable and reasonably content within myself. Even with the improvements that I've made, I still struggle. I probably always will to some degree. I'm with you and Sosie. I really begrudge all these shows that portray mental illnesses and addictions as issues that can be cured within a short period of time when that is far from the case. Some people struggle for a life time.

Even Psychotherapists are discouraged from treating their own children. It's recommended that a 2nd/3rd party be involved with family problems.

There's a separation between a kid needing a parent to listen to them and needing an outside party to listen to them. A Parent can't be both.

A mother was stabbed to death by her teenage daughter because she would not listen to her daughter as a "mother", but attempted to treat her daughter as a patient. That led to alot of anger and frustration because she wanted her MOTHER, not as her shrink.

Poor mother is dead and the daughter is in prison. A tragic situation indeed.

Are we all watching the same programme? Clearly Dr PHil uses Cognitive Behaviour Theory and points out to whoever must follow up with specific discussion with professionals after the programme. Addiction is a very difficult matter to deal with as the relapse rate is so high-which he has said many times. They are NOT cured but Managed. This is hardly "behaviourism".
I understand Dr Phil was presented with an award from American Psychological Association for his use of Television. I don't think Jerry Springer was.
A summary of todays-Thursday programme: drphil.com "shows of the week" gives what he usually does. Of interest to alldeaf.com. A 11 year girl has a problem'- called Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome". She loves do gymnastics which appears to be a high risk of becoming deaf from any accident. The question was: who should make the decision whether to allow her to continue gymnastics? Dr Phil pointed out a 11 year old brains is still developing and the ultimate decision should be made. by the parents. She thought getting a Cochlear Implant would solve her problems. A poll asking readers their view- the 11 year girl: Yes-40% No-60%
Hardly a glib discussion considering a panel of experts were consulted.

No, he doesn't. He uses a combination of Reality Therapy and Behaviorism. Everyone knows that relapse is a feature of the disease of addiction. He is not more well informed for knowing that.

I know of no award the APA has given Dr. Phil. In fact, very few clinicians respect him or his show.

I would venture to say that most struggle for a lifetime. It is not an easy road, and it takes a great deal of courage to move forward. It is a lengthy process.

Why did Dr. Phil do not know about Deaf people when he sees deaf people got anger over hearing girlfriend?
