Hey Harley owner/riders,
My friend is planning to take his 74 Harley Sportster for DOT inspection to get license plate. The question is that his Harley do not have turn signaller on it. It was somewhat stripped down to minimal. He didn't have horn either. I told him pull horn off from his old junked Kawaski and install it to Harley and I'll do wiring job. His Handlebar handles have buttons still there but no wires inside of it, Horn button is readily available and just add wire (negative wire to the horn button). Former owner stripped all wires from it. It can be repaired tho.
He was concerned about turn signaller and not sure if it'lll pass inspection.
I told him to see what they have their says. What ya think, If anyone live in Missouri or Kansas, let us know!!
PLUS what's worst, His rear brake/parking light is a LED type which is not DOT approved (he was looking through Harley part order magazine and discovered the fact recently that he have similiar one). It's single 2 inches round coned red len w/ LED behind it w/ chrome shell. Luckily he have original brake/parking light shell in the box that former owner gave it to him. I told him that I'll swap it temporarily till it pass the inspection then swap back. IMHO, LED brake/parking light is bright enuf during the day. I can see it from distance when I test it under bright sun.
I replaced fuel filter with new "inline" one ($2.64 small Fram filter from automotive section at Walmart. LOL) and paint it gloss black to make it look nicer. Because the old filter (inverted "L" filter used for automotive) w/ hose from tank to carb was interfering choke switch (prevented it to switch to full choke). The former owner did the fuel line from tank down past the carb right side (choke switch side) then under the carb and attach to "inverted "L" filter, from filter to carb.. I replaced with inline and re-did the fuel line so it'll go over carb and keep choke switch free of interference. I added short rubber "stand" for new filter to sit on top of rubber and rubber sit on carb to prevent rubbing or heat (my friend was concerned about heat on filter so he wanted it space it away).
I will post pix of his harley soon.
