I am considering my options for emplyment in schools. I am not fussed about whatever it is a hearing or deaf school but I have thought about it and it would be so much easier for me in a deaf school. I am considering returning to work at my old deaf primary school that I attended. Do you think this is wrong and I should go and work somewhere else, and work in the hearing world and develop my communication skills further with hearing children and adults? I have been working at many schools and day care nurseries with hearing children and it is has been a struggle but i have coped. I just know I might wanna work in a deaf school so I can be a good role model for deaf children and also it would be easier for me, communication wise with staff and children.
This school has many children with additional learning difficulties and disabilties.
I have always been interested in children with other difficulties such as autism, ADHD etc. Hopefully this will be a good learning experience.

What you think? Ideas please?

Really, I think that decision is ultimately up to you and nobody really can tell u which direction to take.

My advice would be is just follow your heart..if u dont feel that working in a hearing school is right, then dont or vice versa. Important, u decide what makes u happy, not what makes others happy.

Good luck!

I for one support you when you feel comfortable with the way your desire of working with. I admit that it would be nice for deaf person has good role model for deaf children. it will impact those deaf kids to look up at, and knowing that they can do it too. I grew up all my life and had almost none role model but one teacher which wasn't enough for me. I wish i had several deaf teachers or teacher aide or any high level to be around with.

since you are 19, i think you go for it and you will see where you would like to go from there.

good luck.

Thanks to those who responded! I have emailed the school explaining that I would like to work there in the future if any jobs come free and if there's any volunteer positions.

In the meantime I will be looking at other options in mainstream schools etc. There must be more deaf children around!

Shel, I second it. Lissa, It all up to you. That's your decide for career in the future. If you are happy to be work with deaf children with learning difficult and disabilities. It will be nice. You're good heart with children. :thumb: Good luck! :)

Go with your heart and you can only make the right decision for yourself. I have to agree with Shel90.

I second with Shel, Pinky and Oceanblue and I feel for you with Frisky Feline. Just find in your heart what make you happy the most with wanting to teach deaf children in a Deaf school. I know what you mean when you decide on a career as a teacher is to be able to be comfortable in the Deaf classroom. You have the deaf experience of what it is like and helping the Deaf children look up to you. I say go for it. Good luck on getting the teaching job in the Deaf school. :thumb:
