N. Georgia county would stockpile rifles in schools | Georgia News - Home

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

A Georgia school system is considering the idea of storing rifles in school offices in case they're needed to defend students in a school shooting.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer says the rifles would be placed at Gainesville High School, Gainesville Middle School and Wood's Mill Academy.

Dyer said the weapons would be locked inside safes in the offices of school resource officers. She said all school resource officers are armed, but recent training showed that handguns they carry would not be effective in long hallways or corridors.

The Times of Gainesville reports that Gainesville police had approached the schools about the idea in April, shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.

The school board is expected to vote on the issue in October.

I think that is a step in the right direction.

When I tell people younger than me, that I can remember a time when High School students could take their rifles to school, they look at me like I am crazy.

Funny thing is ... there were no mass shootings back then .... :hmm:

I wonder why there are no shooting rampages at police departments and gun stores? :hmm:

Back in 1950s, patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder usually confined in state-run hospitals but in 2013, patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are now on free, even untreated too.

I believe that most perpetrators that involved shooting massacre have mental illness.

It is now a situation of where do we go from here? It is no longer a matter of casting blame at policy that was as insane as the results it produced. The good thing is we have much better technology and better medications now.
I appreciate conservatives as watchdogs of our freedom and when they demand practicality. Somehow that does not translate into leadership that works best for us the majority of people.
What has happened with mental health is a huge disaster that could have been handled in a rational way. Want to run the show? Produce a better result is a good place to start.
Conservative leadership underfunds mental health. It is their policy to do so. No matter what they say. I have seen it over and over and over. Talk a big talk and do nothing and make money off the results of the wreckage to our society for the businesses they represent. Just stop it and do what is right.

Its a good idea. Nothing better to stop bad guys with guns then potential victims with guns. To sit and wait begging for the cops to eventually show up while some murderer is on a rampage picking off kids as sitting ducks has been proven a rather a costly idea.
In my opinion this is a good idea for all schools to eventually do

I found out that the safes the rifles will be stored in can only be opened by the resource officer. It has a biological imprinting device. Not sure if that is a good idea or not (what if the resource officer is the first one killed?). Also, the rifles are full auto M4.

I don't think it's a good idea because if a criminal kills an officer and cut the officer's hand off, then the criminal can open the safe with that hand. Of course we have seen something like that in movies. Fantasy can become reality often.

In my opinion the above safe with bio imprint lock is silly and dangerous. as for a murderer killing the officer then getting to the guns well....its best to have teachers and staff open carry. and engage the murderer. as the helpless escape. its called covering fire. and its a staple and standard of training. in the mil and for civies if you wish.
Anyway
To be more open in my beliefs. im a supporter of open carry and believe teachers if they wish, showed be able to carry. The idea of "gun free zones" only makes victims as those hell bent on murder don't follow the rules. im open to learning. just cite an example of a would be mass murderer who decided while entering a potential kill zone to turn away due to its "gun free zone policy" until i see a cite and validate it. im not goign to hold to the opinion that gun free zones make anyone safer but the murderers. fact is. the cops are Always minutes away when seconds count. Having more the one person who is trained and armed in the building will in my opinion radically change the idea in the murderers head that wee school children are soft targets for murder.
for what its worth.

Well, I would hope while the perp is taking time to set down his gun, kneel down, pull out a knife, use two hands to cut off the officer's hand, carry his gun in one hand and the bloody hand in the other, go to the safe, maneuver the hand into position, and open the safe, that people are either escaping or taking other actions against the shooter while he's vulnerable.

Ha Ha, a perp could kill an officer by a gun with a silencer and cut his hand off with a small very sharp ax or machete (which requires only one hand). My point is that a perp or perps can find another way around it like bombing a security office where the officers sit and drink coffee while watching TV everyday.

It isn't bad idea to have armed school staffs if they are comfortable and able-bodied to delay the school massacre and less death/injuries. I'm middle of dispute about teachers should armed and deal with school shooting, but I know school have lockdown.

What kind of biological (biometric) imprinting? Fingerprints, voiceprints, retinal, etc.

:lol:You watch too many movies. Most likely the perp is not gonna know that is the way to get to the guns or if the school even has any guns to begin with.

I'm not sure. All I know is it will be a county board of education vote. I don't even know who will be voting.
Reason I mention this is because of the difficulty most school bonds have gotten at being passed. I assume it is to be considered part of the cost of operating the schools in that district. That means it will likely require a bond being sent to voters for approval, along with the other operating expenses. Keep us posted on how it goes.
