MUST ..... RESIST .... URGE ..... TO .... BE ..... A ...... SMARTASS

Ah, hell ... so Halloween is forbidden in France now?

Some may want to call it 'freedom' of expression.
what ever happened to a woman's 'freedom' to wear what she desires. that is the issue. burqa is a piggish man's idea to control. insecure little freaks.

You are an outsider to a culture commenting about something you genuinely know nothing about. Yes, there is a pressure to cover in VERY few countries- but the VAST majority of women who wear the niqab outside of select few muslim-dominated countries have never encountered any social encouragement to wear the niqab, and are often discouraged by their less-conservative parents.

Choosing to wear more clothing is a choice. Not everyone sees walking around half-naked as "liberating". If you do, that's fine, but to impose your comfort level and standards (or lack thereof) of decency on other people is rather absurd, especially when your supposed reason is freeing them from a mythical controlling figure's pressure.

This is not a wholly implausible scenario. I do not mean stopped as in "having my vehicle stopped" but "being caught". Say, if an officer catches me parking at a "no parking" spot.

again - any parking violation (and non-moving violation) does not warrant ID or an arrest. You will simply get issued a parking ticket. that's all.

"The Republic assures freedom of conscience. It guarantees the free exercise of religious worship under the sole restrictions hereafter in the interest of public order. The Republic does not grant recognition nor pay nor subsidises any church."
It sounds like the "in the interest of public order" could be the loophole.

Absolutely, Reba. I just don't see how banning the burqa is in interest of the public order...unless you count advancing institutionalized bigotry.

An officer has the right to ask for an ID.

It's straight to the guillotine if you are caught wearing a halloween costume.

According to every article I've read on the subject, the French women in question chose to wear the burqa or naqib - they were not necessarily raised this way. Similarly, the hijab has become a symbol of Muslim femininity and pride in the U.S.

In parts of Afghanistan where warlords remain, the burqa stays. In parts where they do not, the burqa largely stays. Maybe it's culture. Maybe it's personal choice. We may not know for another generation. But the law in France has nothing to do with protecting women from "piggish men".

If you think that a face covering is piggish, then what about head coverings? Should we ban Muslim women, Jewish Orthodox women, and Catholic nuns from covering their hair? How about Pentacostal women who cover their ankles and wear dresses? At what point do we stop being the tyrannical majority?

Making assumptions, are we? People should be free to wear what they wish to.

Ummm ... yes, Catholic Nuns cover their faces with a "veil". Some cover the heads with a "habit".

No futile attempt here - I just showed you a wholelotta history you are trying to sweep under the rug.

I do not see any Catholic nuns here to wear cover their faces. I was raised Catholic and I used to be around nuns, stop compare nuns with those women who wear cover their faces. Religions and cultures are different things here. If I go their country they will make me wear face over the veil and if the law here said those women should not cover their faces and they should obey our laws.

If you go to whose country? The French's country? If you go to France? Huh?

Arrests are already being made. It will be interesting to see what happens now.

French burka ban: police arrest two veiled women - Telegraph

IMO - I don't see anything interesting. As usual - there will always be provocateur roaming around after any controversial laws that just passed. ie - Arizona's new immigration enforcement law.

beside... France's not the only one.
Belgium introduced a full ban last year, although it has not been enforced with any vigour. A ban also looks likely in Holland, Spain and Switzerland.

There are no plans to introduce a similar ban in Britain, although politicians from the UK Independence Party and some Tory backbenchers have suggested one.

no problem in Belgium. there will be no problem in Holland, Spain, Switzerland, and France.
