You have already admitted in your previous post that you had misguided view and misdirected anger toward Islamic people. I can explain why you felt the animosity toward Islamic people was different - pre-9/11 and post-9/11.

You read my prior post wrong.

Does the French law ban the burqa without the veil ?

Also, I have NEVER heard of any woman getting into trouble for wearing a veil in NYC.

there ya go... although not NYC

Georgia: Lawsuit Over Muslim Woman’s Head Scarf
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Muslim woman in Georgia who was arrested in 2008 when she refused to remove her head scarf while entering the Douglasville Municipal Court to accompany her nephew to a traffic hearing. The woman, Lisa Valentine, verbally protested the order and was briefly jailed for contempt of court. Ms. Valentine is suing the City of Douglasville and court officers for damages, arguing that her religious freedoms were violated. Georgia has since recommended that religious head coverings be permissible in the state’s courthouses, but Ms. Valentine is asking for the recommendation to be made a binding policy.

No, only with the veil. It's covering of the face that is banned.

Hijabs, that only covers the hair, and other religous symbols, are banned in french secular schools, but not in public.

Jiro said in this thread that hiding the face not is allowed in NY, if I got this right. But burqa is perhaps still allowed in NYC, for religious reasons?

ETA, Jiro mentioned the Anti-Mask Law. Read through it, and looks like it approve the use of burqa, so you are still free to wear it in NYC. Lucky bastards.

Many people say that banning the burqa is not anti-Muslim because Islamic law doesn't require it. Those who adhere to it say that it is a law by virtue of long-standing custom.

Funny. Jews say the same thing. Men aren't required to wear a headcovering outside of prayer in the Torah...but since it's tradition...it has now become law. It's flexible - Reform Jews only wear kippot in shul - but I find anti-burqa laws a little scary.

Do I think the burqa is an insult? As a female, I may be inclined to think so. But I'm not these women. I did consider covering my hair when I was married, but ended up not doing so. I donno. I'm not going to tell a group of women that I'm "protecting" them by forbidding them to wear a burqa. That's dangerous territory.

um.... they're same thing....

I understand the safety issues. But I still feel this is a political stunt aimed at getting votes.

What is going to happen to the women who wear the burqa as part of their religious practice?

They're going to stay inside.

It could be dangerous for Muslim women either way. Its a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

If they don't wear the burqa - what does their husband do? If they do wear the burqa, what does the local law enforcement agencies do?

A headscarf and a veil are not the same thing.

ah.... so you want to do this semantic thing... why don't I help out both of you poor confused souls?

FYI - veil does not mean a full-faced coverage. It simply means a piece of cloth to cover your face or to place on your head. I mean... the modern Catholic nuns you see nowadays... what is the thing they wear as head gear? veil, yes?

what happened in Georgia was a Muslim woman being asked to remove her veil. She got penalized for refusing to do so on religious ground.

Now - what's happening in France is that they're banning a type of facial covering. In this case... it just happened to anger certain group of Muslim people.

we will arrest them for domestic abuse if their husbands hit them.

again - they are free to live in any country that suits them culturally. You cannot just go to any country and expect them to be culturally and socially compatible for you.

I am 100% unsure. What I struggle with, is to understand how 2000 women with burqas in france is a big threat.

The way this is done, makes it look like it's easier to talk about the clothes of 2000 women than the real problems with the economy.

What about banning hooker fashion to stop human traficking instead?
