ah.... so you want to do this semantic thing... why don't I help out both of you poor confused souls?

FYI - veil does not mean a full-faced coverage. It simply means a piece of cloth to cover your face or to place on your head. I mean... the modern Catholic nuns you see nowadays... what is the thing they wear as head gear? veil, yes?

what happened in Georgia was a Muslim woman being asked to remove her veil. She got penalized for refusing to do so on religious ground.

Now - what's happening in France is that they're banning a type of facial covering. In this case... it just happened to anger certain group of Muslim people.

Semantic thing?

What is a veil? A cloth covering the head? No .. that is a scarf. Or, as Catholic Nuns would call it ... a habit.

Nice veiled attempt at semantics there.

When talking about Muslim attire, it is appropriate to distinguish between head and face coverings by calling the latter a veil.

The woman was wearing a headscarf. Probably a hijab. The French law prohibits covering the FACE in public. The New York law prohibits congregants masking themselves in public. That is NOT the same thing as Georgia's issue with a woman who wore a scarf on her head.

if I were to google "veil" for an image.... will I see mostly full-faced coverage?

I am 100% unsure. What I struggle with, is to understand how 2000 women with burqas in france is a big threat.

The way this is done, makes it look like it's easier to talk about the clothes of 2000 women than the real problems with the economy.

What about banning hooker fashion to stop human traficking instead?

Have you ever watched a French movie? They don't make sense. I assume that their movies indicate how the French think.

we will arrest them for domestic abuse if their husbands hit them.

again - they are free to live in any country that suits them culturally. You cannot just go to any country and expect them to be culturally and socially compatible for you.

Here we go again...

it's called burqa.

The essence is quite the same.

You will see garments designed to cover one's face. Mostly wedding veils.

:giggle:

there you go. veil is just a piece of cloth for head. a very broad word.

burqa. hijab. these are specific type of veil.

Negative.

Not all face coverings are burqas in Muslim attire. :)

Jiro...you're derailing my point. My point was that I had never heard of a woman in trouble for wearing a veil in NYC.

You responded with a post about a woman in Georgia wearing a hijab in a courtroom!

The French law is not the same as the NYC law. Hellloooo.

well I specifically said a full-faced coverage... not "ninja attire".

why don't we just drop this farce? This is too trivial to quibble any further over "veil" word. Veil does not mean burqa or niqab. It can be anything. It's just simpler to say burqa if you're referring to burqa, not veil.

and the anti-mask law relating to KKK.

Veils were worn quite often by women in the US half a century ago. They covered the face.

They were "fashionable". Lots of black and white movies show women wearing veils.

Ninjas wear veils?

That has to be harsh to be a ninja in France right now ...

yes. this is a modern, progressive nation.... along with public safety in mind. If one has a problem with that, one is free to live in a country that is socially and culturally acceptable to oneself.
