I don't usually think of saliva and soot for an art medium but it worked for him.

Maybe he never thought of using water to mix with the soot or charcoal.

EDIT: On the other hand, maybe he could not afford charcoal or maybe never knew about the charcoal chalk to draw on papers and books. Very interesting.
