Before looking for them, make sure they don't grow too big requiring a 60-75 gallon tank, silver sharks- u might have meant the bala sharks, they grow up to 12 inches long and need minimum of 50-60 gallon tank at full size, they swim very fast and get spooked easily, too.

Thanks

wow interesting fishes. I really love to have something differently than just gold fish. I saw at my friend´s place and fall in love with large and beautiful color fishes but it´s not cheap. My friend told me that the fish use only sweet water, not normal.. (special water like sea).

I nagged my hubby to have fishes... He rejected because he hate fish and think it´s boring :eek2:

I find fishes not boring when you watch them.... it got me good feeling.

Many species of fish are inedible, Ravensteve.

Going off-topic a bit here, but there are some fish I LOATHE. Chinese carp are one of them. It used to be enjoyable fishing from a bassboat in the nearby Missouri River, but last summer was a nightmare---as we motored down the river, Chinese carp kept leaping out of the water all around us, and many of those bony bastards landed in the boat, and one struck me on my nose. That smarted, I can tell you. Seems like the Chinese carp are getting out of control here, since they have hardly any natural enemies, and it is also getting to the point where we can no longer bring along children to enjoy fishing with us, unless they wear helmets at the very least.
Sheeeeesh.

Yep, goldfish waste makes the tank dirty real fast, so it's their way. My brother has 6 year old Comet Goldfish and they sure get the tank dirty, too. They're huge!

I had 10 little colorful fishes in my fish bowl...

and one day I bought an unusual fish, it was $3.
And it was so beautiful
it looks like this...

And it was eating the little fishes... ALL OF THEM!!!! :eek2:

Nobody told me that that fish was a meat eater!!!!

Speaking of fish, my girls had her own fish so I took care of 2 fish while they were gone.

I was never at home during weeks I dont have them so one day I came home and found one floating upside dead.

I rushed out to buy a similiar looking fish to replace that one so Caroline wont notice.

When Caroline came home, she immediately went to the fish bowl and said Look Mommy ..that fish got fatter and sprouted a moustache while I was gone!

Boy, talk about guilt!!!

I got 10 gallons of tank for my son's xmas gift. One day we went out to get a fish for his tank (after the tank was set up). We got red fin shark. Then put the shark in the tank sure he was trying to hide but no luck. He fed him and that nite, he went to bed. The next morning, my son came to me and said I cant find the shark and I said it should be there. So we went to look for it and couldn't find the shark. Hummmmmmmmm where have he gone to. Maybe my cat got him, ofc I was pissed and started to yelled at my cat. :giggle: About 1/2 hr later, my son came to me and said I found him. HUH??? Where??? So he showed me and it was on the floor, dead already. HUMMMMMMMMMMM. How the heck the shark got out of the tank. I couldn't figure out. So I went into the website and look and look and look. AH UH!!! There, yep that red fin shark sure is a jumper. So I went back to the tank and look around where he would have jump out. Hummmmm yep thru the opening where the filter is. Hummmmmmmmm what can I do. Thinking, thinking, thinking. Got an idea and went to the store brought another shark and screen. We came home and I cut out the size of the opening where the filter was and cover it up with tape. Now put the new shark in the tank. HAHAHA sure he found an opening but can't jump out.

It works!!!!

I just got 20 gallon fish tank for my son's 3rd bday recently in Jan. I am doing research first and see what I can come up with simple fishes,...nothing complicated. i do not want goldfishes, guppies...not my thing. Tetras will be fine...algae eaters is ok....I have aquarium fishes book where I can research to get top, mid and bottom fishes to interact better in the tank... hmm i'm getting there before i set it up haha.

wow. poor you. Next time you will have a better luck without your sister. :giggle:

A generator would be the only way to keep the fish alive in the event of a prolonged (more than 12 hour) blackout. You could also do it with battery backup, but that is incredibly expensive. The best way to keep the water warm would be to insulate the tank. Go to Home Depot and buy some fiberglass insulation. This stuff is dirt cheap. You can buy a huge roll of it for about $12. Make sure you get the type with the built-in vapor barrier. It has a plastic sheet on both sides of the insulating material. Then just wrap it around the tank and tape it in place, like a giant diaper. This should keep the tank warm for at least a day. Try not to touch the fiberglass material at the cut ends, and wear gloves.

You could also crank the heat up in the tank to about 80 degrees or so, to give you more lead time when the power does go out. We have an 80 gallon tank with several catfish in it, and they do just fine at 80 degrees.
