First Bionic Eye Operation Successful

Actually, I don't think it crap because teachology have come long way. It not the first time I have heard about that. They did use that teachology on a blind dog and it works. There was a movie also about a blind man true story about him I forgot the titile but will look it up for you. He was blind in both his eyes. He met a woman fell in love with her and she courage him to get sugery to be able to see again. But the doctor did warn him of the risks he can go blind again. But he took the risk and only see lik a few months. It took his brain to learn to understands colors, shape, and things look like. I was impress by the movie. :)

Just because it CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done.

I felt this.....Feels like the hype about CI is carrying over to this procedure.

Not good at all because often it encourages parents to over raise their expectation with the child.

Oh.....and notice at least ONE of the patients is late blinded. It's a far stretch that blind kids will benifit from this.

That's so interesting! I would like to research for Retinitis Pigmentosa. My friends have RP. I heard about Stem Cell will heal for Retina and Retinitis Pigmentosa. I read the newspaper and watch news. I wasn't surprise about George Bush's vetoed for Stem Cell. I know the RP and Blinds people really need to get a Stem Cell. Which is the best for RP to have a surgery for Bonic or Stem Cell. What do you think?

Wow... this is awesome. One of these days, the blind can see! :)

No, this doesn't mean they're cured though. ;)

Yeah, but Pinky, Stem Cell is still pretty much in the "it might be helpful but then again might not be helpful" thing. It's too early to tell right now. Besides, if its so helpful, then how come other countries haven't seen amazing cures?

I am still research about stem cell for RP and blind. I read the newspaper for Retina's Stem Cell tested on Rat's vision. The Rat was a blind. The scientist got a test for stem cell test and gave an injected to Rat's eyes. Rat can see very good. Other scientist got a test for blind cat to see. Is that working? That's amazing isn't?

yes, but just b/c it worked on animals, doesn't mean it will work on humans.

My first thought about this is 'crap.'- you can bet every parent of a blind child is just going to use this 'implant' as an excuse to teach their child that the best route is to sit around and wait for a doctor's fix.

IMHO, it -should- be just as controversial as cochlear implants- a few years, advance in technology, and some trials, and this could become just as commonplace. Which sucks.

'Yay, science can make blind people see!' doesn't sound as cool when you think of the sacrifices made for the sake of sight.

I totally agree with this. The idea of a bionic eye really depresses me. There is nothing wrong with being blind. Just as there is nothing wrong with being deaf.

People who lose their sight are often pushed into looking for cures rather then accepting what they have.

It also takes money away from valueble rehabilitation services. My sight has got worse and I'm still waiting for rehabilitation This should have happened weeks ago. In the mean time I am constantly reminded of what I can't do. If it wasn't for the internet and NFB and it's philosophies I don't know what I would do.

Yes, I do manage better with a little sight because I'm used to relying on that sight. Instead of giving me alternatives I'm told I should be looking into a cure when I really want to accept the cards I've been dealt with.

When you consider the number of animals that are tortured in laboritories so that I can be deprived of useful rehabilitation services due to lack of funds it just makes me really really mad.

Exactly! There are a lot of things that work on animals that don't work on people. In the mean time the money has to come from somewhere and it's often taken from the people they are supposed to be helping.
