Fetus in Fridge Gets Mom 22 Yrs.

Well, it is STILL not necessary to put her deceased fetus in the fridge. It's not right and it is indecent to do that. I would FEEL for the baby to have a proper and decent burial instead of puttin' in fridge. I don't like to see a mother like this woman puttin' her dead fetus in fridge... that shows she doesn't have that concept of respect for this deceased child. That woman identified herself that she suffered her deceased child by puttin' in fridge since that fetus was ALREADY dead. Why makin' this deceased fetus a double sufferin' in despite of already bein' dead ? That mother is showin' her " abuse " side. It explained why they arrested this mother. They perspect her image as what ever they could name it. Any name that relate to crime, it still could land her in jail.

I am glad they put her away.

well, the father was looking for a coffin, that's how they found out about it. They were going to buried the child. The mother was perserving the body just like any funeral homes would. I think the mother should be put in jail for not notifying the police or health professions that she gave birth to a stillborn.. but then again, some people do have miscarriages.. What do they do with miscarriages?do every miscarriages have to be reported?

If the child is stillborn or pretty much dead (like missing lungs or brain) is not abortion in my definition if they ever decide to do one. abortion or not, you will grieve for that child. I know so many who have.

Right!! And the father did not get charged with anything? He was involved.

You're against abortion.

Ahhhhhhh the familiar debate resumes in another topic.

.....perform the abortions.....often resulting in very grave medical consequences and very often in DEATHS! The result of abortion is always ends in the death of a fetus.

Maria, I strongly suggest that you watch the movie "If these Walls Could Talk" (not the second movie - you need the first movie). It is a very educational movie that talks about abortion laws and abortions that were done in the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s, and compares how illegal abortions affected women and how legal abortions benefited women. I strongly suggest that you watch the movie, please. Do yourself a favor and watch it. It will OPEN your EYES.
You seem like a bright young lady. I am not taking sides with this issue, because it is a woman's issue. I do not have an opinion. All I want to say is this; has anyone EVER changed their mind on this subject? The pro-choice people base their opinion on pure logic. The pro-life people base their opinion on religious teaching. The fact that they arrived at those opinions through such completely different ways should tell you something. My issue here is the same as it always is; that abortion keeps popping it's ugly head up in the most unrelated areas, and I grow tired of both sides yelling over each other. Nobody listens. Nobody changes their minds by reading a Forum post or watching a movie. You can quote medical journals, and the pro-lifers can quote Bibles. Sorry to rain on your parade. Nothing personal.

This thread is not even about abortions.

It is about a mother having a still born baby and placing it in the fridge... It is about the conditions of the house...

Double suffering? You make absolutely no sense. Dead fetuses cannot suffer - they are ALREADY DEAD. What part of "ALREADY DEAD" do you not understand? How does an ALREADY DEAD fetus have a "double suffering"? THE fetus WAS BORN ALREADY DEAD AND WAS THE KEPT IN THE FRIDGE. Where did the DEAD fetuses and bodies cannot feel anything, not even pain.

What if the woman had been wanting/planning to bury the fetus in her own backyard but she did not know it was illegal to do so? She may have not realized that we are supposed to report any and all deaths even when it involves a stillborn, she didn't seem very intelligent in this case so I would not be surprised. The article mentioned that the father had called a funeral home about a baby coffin - that suggests they had intentions of burying the fetus.

Oh, thank you! Finally someone said it... :D

It was born dead. It wasn't suffering.

Yeah, this thread is not about abortion or something. It's a stillborn child(ren) thread, Maria.

I think that woman do need some help... I found it pretty sick and disturbing... No offense, really.

while it is pretty messed up, I just can't see the reasons for the mother to be put in jail for so long over this. As if she performed her own abortion murdered her child. I guess I am not getting the whole story so I can't really judge.

I happen to agree. I am wondering about the viabilty of this fetus. If the fetus was viable (meaning it could have survived outside the womb had it been born alive), then I can maybe justify the sentence; otherwise, no.

I think they (the couple) were just poor white trash! Definately no education! No common sense....just here to breed, screw & breed again!...One dead in the fridge, and another one in the oven....and multiples (other kids) running around a filthy house! Just plain stupid!

No common decency, whatsoever!

Both parents are responsible. And should be steralized...I'm hoping the other children were removed from this environment and given a "chance" in life, otherwise, they'll wind up just like their stupid parents. Dependent upon the taxpayers and the state.

A disgrace to our country. And there are more out there!

Since the father was looking for a coffin, I'm sure that she was trying to preserve the fetus so they could bury it. She could have just left it in the heat to rot, or she could have just dug a hole in the backyard and threw it in.

What do you think they would have done if the stillbirth had of happened at a hospital instead of at home? They would have put it in a refrigerator until the funeral home picked the body up. All deceased bodies are refrigerated until the blood has been drained out and replaced with embalming fluid. If they don't refrigerate them until that time, they decay.

Texas mom who put fetus in fridge gets 10 years
Pregnant mother of 9 was convicted of endangering kids

LUBBOCK, Texas - A mother of nine who was charged after a dead fetus was found in the refrigerator of her filthy home was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for endangering her children.

Gloria Ramirez, who is eight months pregnant, was convicted Thursday of child injury and endangerment. The 28-year-old was ordered to serve 10 years on a child injury conviction and two years for each of six endangerment charges. Each sentence will be served concurrently.

Prosecutor Jennifer Bassett said she believed the sentence was "completely appropriate."

Defense attorney Ted Hogan said in an e-mail that he was disappointed by the sentence, calling it a "tragic case." He had said in closing statements that his client "was probably going to be convicted" but urged jurors to grant probation instead of prison so that her children could easily visit their mother.

Police came to Ramirez's home in 2007 after her husband, Anthony Moya, called a funeral home about a casket for a stillborn infant. Authorities found the fetus in a baby wipe box, placed inside a refrigerator.

Investigators also found dirty diapers stacked nearly 4 feet high in closets throughout the house, decaying food around the home, overflowed trash bins, and bare and soiled mattresses.

Children removed

According to testimony, Ramirez blamed her children on her miscarriage, telling them they weren't letting her sleep.

She also threatened their lives if they told anyone about the conditions inside the home, one child testified.

Moya was arrested on seven child endangerment charges on the day that seven of the children were removed. His trial was set to begin this month.

Ramirez was indicted on seven child endangerment charges in December 2007. In April, a Lubbock County grand jury added four counts of injury to a child involving the two youngest children, but prosecutors asked jurors to consider only one count of injury to a child and six counts of child endangerment.

Five of the children were in the state's permanent custody; the oldest child is with her biological father and a family is in the process of adopting the youngest child. The couple's twins, born May 2008, were in temporary state custody.

Oh wow!

What about the dad? What kind of charges he get? He is a parent too.

To make sure the other children are in a clean environment and safe.

Plus he was gone to get a casket? He obviously knew.

Poor kids.

oh I totally agree. I think any adults who live with the children is just as responsible for their well being. Just because the mother is lazy doesn't mean you have to. These are children! Someone got to take care of them if the other one won't. I mean what if the mother was watching tv and you saw one of the kid go out the street. Are you going to just stand there and say " hey, she is out on the street, go get her" and don't do anything about it ? What if she doesn't get the child, are you going to stand there and watch him get hit? Well that's how I feel about guys who neglect the house because they think it is not their job. My goodness, there are children living there. I think they need to go to jail too.

I mean, if they were divorced and live in their own place, they would go to jail if their children were staying with them in a dirty condition.

Well, she would be a medical marvel, if she could have a stillborn child, then get pregnant right afterward. I did not read the article, just drawing some obvious conclusions based on materials provided here. I am assuming the fetus was in the freezer for a few weeks, minimum. Dad comes along and says "OK kids. Who wants Ore-Ida?" then pops the door of the freezer open and says "Honey, what is this, chicken?"

Not saying it was the wisest thing to do, or even the most logical coming from our perspective, but it beats some of the alternatives she could have chosen. But actually, many women are more fertile right after giving birth, so the fact that she had a still born and then became pregnant so soon afterward really isn't all that unusual.

I wouldn't guess that this family was middle class and insured, either. Maybe it took a few weeks for the father to come up with the funds to purchase a coffin. Who knows? I'm wondering as well, if they were recent immigrants from an extremely poor area that were culturally accustomed to handling the burial of still born infants in this manner, as well as living in deplorable conditions. The article really didn't give many details.

Yeah, I think it took them awhile to figure out what they want to do about the child.

other than that, I think the child abuse charge is reasonable. Although I do wonder if the kids love their mother very much. because to a child, they don't care about how bad the house look. All they care about is being with their parents.

 That is so disgusting! Aren't those parents lazy and slobs? How hard is it to take trash outside to the garage daily? It's not hard to do! I can't possible believe they allowed dirty diapers being stacked up nearly four feet high in closets. I bet their house is full of dust and smell of odor. That is a fire/health hazard for having a house that filthy.

Somebody needs to teach those parents how to clean obviously they don't know how or they are just plain lazy parents that don't care.

I agreed with the rest of your statement. The part I quoted is troubling to me, not because you said it; but because of how absurd our immigration situation has become. A family of 9 kids, plus a stillborn, plus another on the way, and they made it (maybe not this big at the time) to the good old USA, where Dad needs to collect aluminum cans to provide a proper burial for his stillborn, while the stillborn rests in the freezer. God Bless America! As for the machine gun womb on this woman, maybe she should develop a new hobby?

Right. It's called the hospital morgue.

The two different last names indicate that this was a common-law marriage and that the children were fathered by a different man, not the man involved in this case. (although he does need to be slapped on the back of the head and asked "What were you thinking?") I agree that he should have at least stood up and said no more to these deplorable conditions.

I think we all can agree that these living conditions would pose a serious health risk to ANYONE, not just children. I have a feeling that due to the overall condition of their home, it has likely been condemned by health officials by now.

The common-law husband/ man involved in this case is also getting a trial, his begins this month according to Liebling's news source. He's not getting off scot free as many of you think. Read carefully.

The woman obviously knew that the conditions were absolutely deplorable and knew she could get in very real trouble if authorities knew, if she had threatened the kids with their lives if they ever told anyone about the conditions in the home.

This isn't about the fetus in the fridge suffering, this is about the OTHER children that were suffering. It had to be traumatizing for them to know that a stillborn baby was placed in their fridge, and the fact that they lived in fecal matter and mold.

This isn't even about abortion, or pro-life. Its about a set of parents that were in a very disturbing frame of mind to do this and to have their own children living in deplorable conditions. Let's keep the discussion on that topic shall we, hmmm?
