Father kills sons, himself in Miami Beach
The couple was in town from Alton Ill. with their two young children celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary.
But the vacation turned tragic early Saturday morning when the Illinois man, Edward Van Dyk, 43, threw his boys off the 15th floor of the Loews Hotel in South Beach and then jumped to his own death.
The boys, ages 4 and 8, were still in their pajamas, Miami Beach Police spokesman Robert Hernandez said.
''It's a terrible tragedy,'' Hernandez said. ``This is an individual who had issues and selfishly took his children's life.''
The children's mother was not injured, Hernandez said. The identities of all family members were not immediately released.
Van Dyk is a radiology oncologist at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Ill., according to hospital officials.
Miami Beach police identified the wife as Qinuo Van Dyk. She, too, is a doctor, but is not practicing because she had chosen to stay at home to care of their children.
According to Hernandez this is what happened at the hotel:
At about 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the mother, who was in another room, heard one of her children screaming.
She ran out and spotted her husband jumping over the balcony.
She looked over the railing and found her young boys together with their father, lying on the mezzanine roof.
The woman, believed to be in her late 30s, early 40s, told police she and her husband had been having marital problems for the past six months.
On Saturday afternoon, police were trying to interview witnesses and contact relatives of the family.
But even police were in shock over what had happened.
''What would possess someone to take his two children, dressed in their pajamas and throw them over the balcony?'' asked Hernandez.
