Schiavo debate swings on faith Case ignites national discussion about right to live, die...

Supporters of Terri Schiavo are guided by faith. Their pursuit to save Schiavo, who her parents say is a devout Roman Catholic, are continuing into Holy Week and propelling her life into the center of a passionate national debate.

From the vigils to the lawyers and even the politicians — all are raising challenging questions about life and death, right and wrong, faith and politics.

But why has Schiavo's life galvanized so many people? Analysts say her case is an extension of the abortion debate — a highly charged, emotional subject influenced by religious beliefs.

For Methodist minister Robert Schenk, who's kept a steady vigil outside Schiavo’s hospice, religion is the central theme of this debate. His side says the focus should be on saving human life.

“The way we treat the disabled is no different than the question of how we treat the unborn or how we treat the elderly,” says Rev. Schenk.

It's a sentiment that reached all the way to Washington in an unprecedented way this week.

“As the House convenes this Palm Sunday the Florida courts are enforcing a merciless directive to deprive Terri Schiavo of her right to life,” said Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., during House debate over the weekend on a bill to allow federal courts to review the decision to remove Schiavo’s feeding tube.

But according to the latest NBC News poll, while 62 percent of Americans say faith plays a major role in their marriage and raising children, only 36 percent say faith plays a major role when making medical decisions.

“Most Americans are not at the point where they believe medicine is entirely about faith,” says John Green, a professor of religion and politics at the University of Akron in Ohio.

Even among the faithful there are differing views.

“Myself and many others believe that this would not be euthanasia, but would just be the removal of an artificial block to the natural dying process,” says Rev. James Bretzke, an associate religion professor at the University of San Francisco.

"We need to have this conversation on a national level," says Rev. Schenk. "We need to ask ourselves these very, very serious moral questions and we need to resolve them."

No matter the legal outcome of Terri Schiavo's case, for her faithful supporters, the debate about how faith affects people's lives will go on.

Faith has a place in my medical decisions

I will be operated on tomorrow morning. My doctor, my surgeon, my wife, and my mother have instructions to use extraordinary measures to sustain my life. I have prayed since before I agreed to the surgery last week, and every day since.

Church congregations and Sunday School classes, bible study groups of three denominations are sending up prayers on my behalf, as are web friends from Canada, Nova Scotia, Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and from shore to shore, border to border here in the States.

I am not in the least afraid of the outcome. Faith does that for me. My faith, and the faith of my friends and family. But I do agree there are far too many people these days in society, including priests and ministers who have weak or no faith. I pray for them too.

Codger

Aw Codger , I will pray for you too! Keep us post on your condition!

:gpost: Codger

I agree with you Codger that shows postive side of having faith than giving up hope.

I think that they should have done the same with Terri,. Have faith and believe in miracle that can happen if you have faith. ;) That is why I am upset about how people, the judge and Michael had no faith in Terri's process and having the faith that her outcome will be successful, But too bad they gave up too soon. No matter how long it takes, it could take years, it could take months but giving up hope and faith isn't gotta get them anywhere. I believe that is why she hasn't died during the times she was in the hosptial because maybe it wasn't her time to die yet, maybe God had plans for her to get better, but Michael got the court involved, the American people involved and they listened to Michael, What made Michael God anyways?

Codge, I pray for you and have good success on your operation. Keep update with your news.

Yes, I am faith on medicine and also doctors, too. I know theparies/medicine works successfully mostly but I has to face if the doctors said that any therapies/medicine can't help me.

Terri is my thought and pray and still think of her.

The German charity want to get Terri back to Germany for care/treatment as what Germans beleive that theparies would work on her. I hope the therapy will success for her as what the German doctors beleive. I hope it won't too late for Terri.

It might be too late, because she was with no food, water since last Friday now it's almost a week, tomorrow it would be. And I felt so helpless and feeling bad for Terri, whom is suffering right now with no food or water. It breaks my heart. I thought people would really care about her, straving her is not the answer.

Cheri, Angel, Reba, Leibling, Bullym0m, all of you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and well wishes. I did not post about my circumstances to detract from the theme of this thread, but to show that faith is alive and well. Not only in America, Canada, Germany, but around the world. Faith and action can do many things. Neither of them alone produces results. My mind is really more on Terri's situation more than my own. Maybe that is a gift from her to me. I know that my prayers for her are my gift to her. And whatever they do to her, whether God calls her home today or extends her life even another year or longer, she has given the world a gift by raising our conciousness of the value of life. Perhaps someone somewhere will do something in her memory that will make a difference for the next Terri. That may be you or me.

Codger, You making me cry here. LOL! Oh my... That was one movement comment I've even seen in AllDeaf. com. You made me pouring here. I hope I don't flood up my house from all my tears :tears:

Codger,

Expression really quite well impressive what you've said!

*Happy tears* So Many Thanks for your being condience!

It better not be just a root canal is all I can say, Codger.
You tend to understate, though, so I am concerned.
I will yell it here---- WE NEED CODGER!
If that is a prayer then so be it.

Codger, surely you can include me right along in the prayer circle, praying and believing with faith knowing you'll be in His Hands, under His Care...knowing you'll be back here with a few barrels of laughter for us as well as your meaningful thoughts which you do share in Alldeaf. Do take great care and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers tonight...as I will continue with my vigil by praying for Terri in all hope and with faith believing that something great will come out of all this--

Hang in there and I do hope for a speedy recovery, family and friends being nearby giving you all the support you can get as well as for us AD'ers giving you encouragements and support too.

T'care!

~RR
