electric license plate?... WTF..

Since they commit crimes, why would this be an issue for us?

One more thought:

Would this mean that state prisoners would no longer make license plates?

Really pointless, many newer cars have transponder keys, do you know what that is? Since my truck uses that, and if you copy my keys and try to start my truck, it won't work. Because my keys have built in chipset where it communicates with vehicle computer. Once match is made, it will let me start the engine.

Professional car thieves don't just get in car and drive away. Usually they will move it into enclosed trailer and take the plate out and disappear leaving brand new license plate technology useless.

and I thought you said "there is no such thing as impossible" and "never assume there isn't any issues with technologies"?

Some of you might remember why there was change from old fashioned odometer to digital odometer? The intention was to stop from odometer rollbacks. Government had mandate that change during early 90's. IT did work but for only short time, eventually crooks found a way to mess up with them (Digital odometer) and successfully rolled back. Including my Jeep Cherokee, I found out how and it was very easy, plus much harder to detect as well. With old fashioned odometer, can tell if it was rolled back or not. With Digital, no way to tell. In the end with all the cost spent on it who loses? We the suckers!

My Cherokee is already past 10 years old, so odometer isn't an issue anymore.

One more question that I need to check on.

Since South Carolina has hundreds of plate styles for personalized and special interests, would they all be made in the digital format? Or will we all have to go back to one style plate? (That would make a lot of people very unhappy; also, SC and groups derive income from the specialized plates.)
that's why it's a "prototype". I'm sure at later time - a driver can choose a design template for additional fee.

good question. I'm sure the state government can work something out with the manufacturer.

Right! I don't assume that my transponder keys will work in every scenarios. There are some scenarios that somebody will figure out how to steal my truck without my knowledge. Believe it or not, I was victim of stolen vehicle. AND I know it

good. then your argument is invalid.

No, Your argument is invalid. Im trying to point out that government have made several attempts thwart the thieves for years, including all technologies and none of them works by 100% Even this new so called digitial license plate, people will STILL find way to beat the system. Why should we shell out more money only to find out it isn't fool-proof after all!

Just thought of something! This (the bold) may well be a factor in carjacking — they want the key as well as the car/truck/SUV or whatever.

Exactly, it actually made some cases worsen. Victims often get hurt or killed because of this. That is why I am against the idea of adding more technologies where they have failed in the past.

same could be said for our EZ-Pass, GPS, etc but nothing really happened, right?

there you go.
It's kinda different in CA, I read that we are on a different system than other states. Because there's a lot of EZpass (FasTrak) here, some serious hackers have found ways to get past the system without paying.

Black Hat 2008: FasTrak toll system completely broken

I support this idea, but what if hackers mess up thousands of license plates that will cost our tax money.
That's what I thought too. I don't think the hackers will hack everyone (waste too much time), but they will do anything to have fun with people they don't like for personal reasons. What about a grandma with electronic license plate and it says 'stolen', because some hackers wanted to have fun. I can totally see it happening.

fool-proof? people? you're acting like millions of people will be able to hack it

sure only a handful of hackers will figure it out but it's insignificant.

Read what Naisho just said above your last post.

and? it's still insignificant.

simple - once an exploit is found... a new security update is patched.. duh?

LOL at what cost? Why SHOULD I pay more for something that don't always works.

I rest my case, you don't see other feedbacks that support why I disagreed with you. You are the one who THINKS your right all da time. Isn't it time for you to quit being perfectionist, eh?

With a bit of a gap between the two. The exploit is found and then the hole that the exploit is taking advantage of has to be found by those that write the new security update.

And it cost us money after all.

huh? what? aren't you doing same for yourself too? LOL!

this has nothing to do with being perfectionist. I'm just being realistic and progressive.

*shrug* not a big deal. it's a fact of life.

a few people figured out how to hack NYC Metro Card for free subway pass and then later the exploit was fixed. same thing for iPhone lock hack.

no big deal.
