Just device as same like ONSTAR style remote car for report stolen. DMV can remote to new invent electric license plate turn "SUSPEND", "STOLEN", "UNINSURED" and "AMBER ALERT" while police view it and easy arrest them.

LOL, another attempt in controlling society from our own government? I don't think this is gonna work cause criminals will figure a way to cover up. Gee too much technology dependent already! Sad!

controlling? how exactly then?

and how is this any different from your license plate with tags? and are you saying you prefer to stick with our current costly dysfunctional system?

sounds good! :thumb:

before anybody cries privacy issue...
Even though the DMV would be able to send a signal to the electronic license plate to change its wording, the agency would not be able to track where you are. "No one entity could actually track an individual vehicle," Bannister says. "It would require three court orders: to the DMV; to us; and the (cellular) carrier themselves to actually be able to locate a vehicle."

I support this idea, but what if hackers mess up thousands of license plates that will cost our tax money.

same could be said for our EZ-Pass, GPS, etc but nothing really happened, right?

there you go.

Don't be naive! You know, I have my own saying "There is no such thing as impossible" We all will never know the possibilities when it comes to technologies. There are plenty of people out there that WILL attempt on figure out the weakest link and break and exploit them. Remember, the idea of this license plate is controlled by what? Computer, and have there been cases where somebody hacked in computer? Answer is Yes, then there will always be chance of it happening, only time will tell.

Seems like it would be cheaper and more secure to make a scanner that scans plates from the cops car. It could automatically alert them of issues. I suppose it wouldn't alert the public though.

Yes and no, but the technology already used. Many not realize there are some plates with built in transmitter and police will pick up. Here in NYS, the plates have chips embedded already and whenever car with that plate passed cop, and if there are any issues cop will stop ya. Friend of mine found out the hard way.

Why no? There are some clever criminals out there, they will do anything to cover up, sometimes swapping the plate. It takes only two screws to swap the plate. Screws are just standard ones and anyone have tools for that anyway.

There are no such thing as 100% fool proof security when it comes to technologies.

Also, most newer cars got keys with transponder built in, why still need more technology with security? Whats wrong with transponder keys? Overall its moot point.

Wow! You actually heard nothing about EZ pass? Yes, there has been problems with them, there are millions of unpaid toll and fines. And what GPS got to offer for hackers? NADA Nothing zip whatever.

no.... you were talking about "another attempt in controlling society from our own government".... not some technical issues.

Never assume there isn't any issues with technologies.
I've never said such thing. You did.

no but there is such a thing as "paranoia".

No good and no works... You can mask it with the other plates where the police can't see them. How come? Some nerd people can make trick plates to fool the cops or public.. Just saying..

still better than current system. hell lot better.

It could save my time not to get a ticket when i see that my registeration is expired on the electric plate. Therefore I dont have to drive.

No matter what the system, if other drivers and the police don't pay attention to the plates, then there is no better system.

I've seen expired tags, upside-down plates, dirt-covered plates, and plates obscured by brackets and equipment. Obviously nothing is done about them, so why would a new system make a difference? Also, in South Carolina, utility trailers aren't required to have plates (or lights), so if you are pulling one of those, many times the vehicle plate is blocked from easy view, too.

I do like the Amber Alert feature of the proposed plate, although I think the "Stolen" and "Amber" notifications need to be easier to read, especially under all weather conditions.

One more question that I need to check on.

Since South Carolina has hundreds of plate styles for personalized and special interests, would they all be made in the digital format? Or will we all have to go back to one style plate? (That would make a lot of people very unhappy; also, SC and groups derive income from the specialized plates.)

One more thought:

Would this mean that state prisoners would no longer make license plates?

Exactly my thinking, we pay more only to find out there is loopholes, end up need improvement, we end up paying more and so on, it will never stop until we realize we are throwing money in trash can.

If what to happen I would think anyone planning to steal cars would have some license plates that been disable to put on stolen cars.

Really pointless, many newer cars have transponder keys, do you know what that is? Since my truck uses that, and if you copy my keys and try to start my truck, it won't work. Because my keys have built in chipset where it communicates with vehicle computer. Once match is made, it will let me start the engine.

Professional car thieves don't just get in car and drive away. Usually they will move it into enclosed trailer and take the plate out and disappear leaving brand new license plate technology useless.
