I saw in another post people talking about eating McDonald's. I personally do not eat out much anymore unless I have someone with me as I am self conscience about not being able to hear or communicate with the hearing very well. What are some tips y'all use for ordering and such?

Just write your order on a notepad and hand it to the cashier.

Eventually you are going to have to learn how to survive out there. We can help you to adapt, but you will have to just get out there and figure out what works for you.

When I go to Boston Market, I started out trying to speak the order and they didn't understand me. Now, I type out the order and print it up and take it in. They have commented on how much they like that, they are thinking (this location) of having papers with check boxes for the menu items. What I like about typing it ahead of time, I can make a notation that I am allergic to dairy and they will make sure that what I order has no dairy in it. I can also make a notation that there are either 1 or 2 senior dinners on there and we get the discount on those for my mother and MIL.

You've been deaf around 10 years, right?....I've been deaf for 50...don't have much trouble with people misunderstanding me, just at times I've been told that I "slur" my words. And of course there are words that are a tongue twister (to me), so I do at times write it down....

I was recently in penna and went to a subway that had a touch screen for plqcing. Your order. Man,, I thought that was a great idea. You don't really even need to read since. The menu pages had pics of what you select. Sure wish it. Catches on at more places. Fast and fun and deaf friendly

Sometimes when I don't feel like talking, I just type down what I want on my iPhone and show it to the person taking orders.

in bsl it two index finger meeting to make what looks like big M in macdonalds alto proper m 3 fingers of opposit hand.ASDA is quick tap on hip like adverts

Wirelessly posted

At McDonald's I have seen a friend use a laser pointer to point what he wants on the overhead menu.

My biggest issue at these fast food restaurants (other than the food's content) is that many of the people working behind the counter have poor English skills. I can't understand them, they can't understand me. Many have really thick Spanish, Indian, and Chinese accents, and speaking in broken English with those thick accents really throws me off. If hearing people barely understand them, imagine what deaf people go through?

Forget the pad & paper method....many of them can't even read English either.

This is more prevalent in metro areas near big cities, especially Washington, DC.

Usually never an issue for me in rural areas.

This is what I do. Since my face is paralyzed I cant talk good at all, not many people can understand me. So prior to going into any business that requires me to talk I will type out what I need on my phone (and tell them I am deaf). I have yet to encounter any real problems....minus a white castle manager who thought i was trying to rob them {idiot})

That is a good idea as well...have you had anyone refuse to look at your phone? Some are very uncomfortable with the idea.

Me too! On the facial paralysis and general lack of problems.

People in stores are generally cooperative as the want to sell you their product!

It was never an issue for me. I forgot to mention that prior to showing them my iPhone, I point to my ear and shake my head to emphasize I'm deaf. Works every time.

I just sign in telling them, " i need a pen and paper" some of them cant figure out what the heck i was talking. I repeat sign such as a body language. They got it!
