TRENTON, N.J. -- One of the nation's biggest drug manufacturers is willing to bet millions of dollars that a nasal spray could become the weapon of choice in the battle of the bulge.
Merck is forging a multimillion-dollar partnership with a much smaller company that has already begun testing a drug that tricks the brain into thinking the stomach is full.
The nasal spray, which is in early stages of testing, is designed to deliver the natural, appetite-regulating hormone PYY directly to the bloodstream.
The chairman of Nastech Pharmaceutical said if further testing goes well, the drug could help cut daily calorie intake by as much as 30 percent. Nastech CEO Dr. Steven Quay said that translates into an average weight loss of about 50 pounds a year.
By extension, Quay said, the new drug might even help with related medical problems like diabetes and heart disease.
