I did sit on my father's lap driving his VW bettle on the last street that led up to his home often when I visited him-- earlier as age 8.
Took driver's lessons at home-- (filled out quizzes, then mailed it to be graded), then 6 hours behind the wheel with a driver instructor... Scared sh*tless out of my mind.
Then I got my permit. My mother didn't let me practicing much. I only logged in 5 hours with her before she forbidded me. (I accidently put in "D" when I was supposed to reverse... I didn't hit anything but my mom freaked out and said I CAN'T drive).... but thank goodness for good friends who let me driving their cars. THEY SURE PUT IN A LOT OF TRUST IN ME!
I was supposed to log in 50 hours of daytime driving and 10 hours of nighttime but my mom lied on the record... I only logged in like 25 daytime driving with my friends' cars (I drove in their cars 30 minutes daily) and 2 hrs of nighttime driving... UGH!
So the day I took my driver's license at age 16-- I passed.

I made 5 errors out of 17 possible errors. The procotor said I don't look at mirrors-- I DID! I think she didn't notice that I used my EYES, not twist my neck 180degrees just to check out my mirrors.
After I got my license and rubbed it in my mother's face-- I never drove my own car until I got into an university. But between that and my car, more other friends let me driving their cars(and my experience included a truck, van, and forth on!)... Most of the times I drove a '98 GEO PRIZM and '95 TOYOTA COROLLA which are alot similar... which leads to me my current car-- a 2000 Toyota Corolla.
I got a car finally at age 17 when my mother realized that she CANNOT drive me to my university for classes and our schedule don't work out for me to borrow her car (after her work or whatever)... so she finally gave in to the idea of her Deaf daughter burning the rubber on the roads.
(and only nearly two months ago, I got into my first *but minor* accident. and I am 20! So I am doing pretty good...)
REBEL>> The fees sure gained a lot lately! Maybe it is different by state...? I think it costs me 90$ for the lessons at home to get a driving permit. (there is a free driving ed class offered at my HS for Deaf students but you have to take it for two semesters. UGH! I am impatient...) I had to pay my instructor 110$ for the 6 hours and to recieve an approved certificate for license that I passed his behind-the-wheel instructions. Then for the license, 25$... I think.
