Ahh, either one... I cant donate is because of history by dad's side plus my weight under 110lb. :)

You guys are so brave...I wish I could but I am so afraid...I get sick (getting nausea and having an increased heart rate) when I think of having a needle in my arm. If it was in area where you get shots then I would not mind, but not on spot near joint...man...

Dunno, why I can't find courage to do it...is it a phobias or something?

Even I feel little sick reading those posts...

But even though I have never done it, I still encourage other people to donor if possible, lol.

Actually, type O- is the most wanted blood since it can be given to anyone.

If a person was rushed to ER and needed a blood transfusion, they check the patient's record. If there's nothing on file, they have to rely on O-.

So, if you donate blood... you're actually doing EVERYONE a favor... not just O- people. :thumb:

I've donated blood couple of times. Although, I haven't donated for a long time. My blood type is so common that the blood bank has requested for me to come in to donate. I'd be glad to donate but I just never really found the time to do it.

I've also donated plasma as well. Plasma is collected through a process called "plasmapheresis." When you come in to donate, a needle is placed in your vein and your blood is pumped into a specialized spinning device that separates the plasma from the other whole blood components, such as red and white blood cells and platelets. While the plasma is collected, the other blood components are filtered into a reservoir. Once the reservoir is full, your red and white blood cells and platelets are returned to your body.

Throughout the process, the system automatically alternates between collection and replacement until the predetermined amount of plasma, based on your weight, is obtained.

The tubing and all other collection supplies that come in contact with your blood are discarded and replaced with new, sterile materials each time a donation procedure is performed.

The purpose of donating plasma is to help people with leukemia, newborn babies, cardiovascular patients. Plasma donations are also used to treat people suffering from hemophilia, severe burns, shock, and a variety of other life-threatening conditions, such as exposure to rabies.

Interesting!! Thanks for sharing this! I don't know if I can do that lol!

I'll have to research on that a little more to understand more. :)

Yea.. I've already knows about this details before DR did explained us long time ago.. but I'm glad I've found you... So I can use yours! :giggle:

Actually, it's not blood that made me feel queasy, it's needle in certain place. Like for example, on TV I can watch doctor do operation on heart but I can't watch doctor do operation on eye or nail. Certain area that I viewed as the most sensitive spot on human body. Unfortunately, the area near the joint is like that to me.
Last summer my dog broke a vein and blood shoot out everywhere, and I had to hold it down until dad took her to ER, I did not pass out from that. But it was gross though. Afterward, I had to clean blood everywhere in the house.

So I knew it can't be blood (especially that I am woman as well) but pain (especially in odd area) is something I have low tolerance for.

I have passed out several time when I felt so sick or was in pain so much in my stomach area. I have never met anyone that had this problem like I do. Doctors can't find out why.

I think my blood type is O+ so it is not the most needed blood right? I forgot which one is the most unlucky blood type for anyone to have. I think it's either O+ or AB type. I forgot.

I went to Donate blood last Wednesday. When I spoke to the lady on my minicom I was told that I could give blood then. When I turned up they had changed their minds. They said that they were worried about if I was faint they would not be able to communicate with me because I am deafblind. Also they don't have the information I need to read in Braille. I rang back on friday to tell them I would be able to read using my portable CCTV. The person I've been speaking to said she hoped I could donate soon but unfortunately it wasn't up to her. It was up to this Dr who was in charge so I ring her up on monday.

Has anyone else had problems like this giving blood?

WHERE TO DONATE
Select the most convenient donation center for a map, driving directions and hours.

I tried but they thought my hemoglobin was to low which is kinda funny cause i had surgery 2 weeks later and they said i had a perfectly normal 12. something hemoglobin so i'll go back soon and try again and than do it as often as i can.

You can donate at anytime you want..it is up to you.

Some is having a surgery in near future, and get her/his own blood for blood transfusion instead of someone's else blood. That's what my friend did. I would do the same thing if I am having surgery for whatever reason.

That's called Autologous donation and I done that before I had major surgery to myself.

They don't mention deafblindness or Epilepsy. When I mentioned that I used to take Tegretol for epilepsy and stopped taking it a year ago they say I have to wait 3 years but I've never actually had a grand mal attack. In fact I only carried on taking Tegretol as long as I did because I was worried that if I gave it up then I would start having problems but I've not had problem with epilepsy for years. I think I'm just being discriminated against so I'll just have to fight it.

Still I'm an organ doner. My doner card has arrived at last. I would also like to be a live donor. I think the kidney is the organ they take from live donors although I would also donate a cornea as there is nothing wrong with the eyes themselves and it might be useful for someone else. Only one cornea mind as I do still have some useful vision. I havent suggested it to them yet though.

Blood donation

Has anybody on here donated blood?

I would love to donate blood but unfortunately I have received blood myself so I cannot.

How many times have you donated?

Never. I have other genetic problems besides deafness and they don't want my blood.

I would like to but I'm bit scared because I have a low blood pressure. I don't wanna think about what would happen if they draw couple bags worth of my blood.

Never. I can get fainted easily from seeing blood. I had my blood drawing up for my pregnancy. I did faint after i finished it. i don't like how i feel about it. *shivered*

I would love to give blood!...But I've been anemic and pass out easy....and needles freek me out!....Even having my blood drawn for tests, I almost passed out...

Then again...maybe I'm making a "mountain out of a mole hill"!...Eating iron rich foods, such as Liver (which I do like sometimes)...should help and Iron pills also.....the only problem with the iron pills is that they make me want to eat and eat!

It's a good suggestion for me this week, is to attempt to overcome my fear of needles and dizziness...and go ahead and give blood! Thks. for the reminder!
