Donate Blood

You can make an appt and donate if you want. I feel good to help out cuz they are screaming for more blood in our area. It is up to you. :thumb:
I donated my blood at long time ago.

I don't mind if they ask me to donate my blood.

WOW! That's a long time to donate the blood! You guys are great! :)

I happened saw on news about needing more blood and other mentioned too.

I used to give blood when I was able, since 1971.

Hubby has been giving blood regularly for about 30 years.

Neither one of us has ever received any money for donating blood.

From the Red Cross website:

"Why doesn't the Red Cross pay its blood donors to increase the blood supply?
Scientific data shows that people who donate blood for altruistic reasons are the safest blood donors. As an extra layer of safety to the blood supply, Red Cross accepts only volunteer blood donors."

Yes same with me. If they give me $, thanks but I got points. That's fine too. :) I got 'blood' pin. It is cute tiny thing! :giggle:

I guess I have to wait for card in the mail since I was new to it. :)

I never heard that we get money from donate our blood or whatever... Its about donation to save people's life, not money.

If you are under weigh, yes. They will have to reject you. And also medication list if you are taking what the list said, cannot donate. Also AIDS/HIV too.
Talk to Red Cross in your area (not sure if you have one) and see what they can do for you.

I once wanted to donate blood but got rejected cuz I was skinny then :dunno:

That's great that most of you willing to donate! :thumb: Keep it up and help save people's lives.

Yea I donate blood to help someone in needs I haven't been doing it in a long time thou., I refused to take the money they had offered, I told them to keep it. I don't want to get paid for donating blood, I want to do it to save someone's life, that's all it matters to me the most. ;)

I didn't want God to look down on me for being greedy, and I am not a greedy person, I love to help anyone that needs the help in order for their life to be saved. ;)

I've donated blood in the past but I haven't gone in a long time now....

Never - after read the leaflet that they won't accept my blood - see the red letters below as self-explanatory!!!

ADDITIONAL “MAD COW” BLOOD DONOR RESTRICTIONS TIGHTEN BLOOD SUPPLY EVEN FURTHER

Blood Centers of the Pacific Expects a Loss of Almost 10,000 Pints of Blood a Year

SAN FRANCISCO – Blood Centers of the Pacific (BCP), which supplies blood to 40 Northern California hospitals, today issued an appeal for more blood donors as it faces new, tougher federal restrictions about who can donate blood, and a likely summertime blood shortage.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates blood banks, issued additional blood donor criteria due to the theoretical risk of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (nvCJD), sometimes called the human form of “mad cow disease.”

The new guidelines, which blood banks across the country must institute by May 28, 2002, excludes blood donors who:

have spent three or more months in the UK from 1980 through 1996;
have spent five years in France from 1980 to the present;
received a blood transfusion in the UK between 1980 and the present;
are current or former military personnel and their dependents, who spent time on military bases in northern Europe during 1980-1990, or southern Europe during 1980-1996, for six months or more.
BCP anticipates that approximately 7.6% of its donors will be deferred due to the new guidelines. This translates to a loss of 9,500 pints of blood annually (each donor gives an average of 1.25 times a year). Nationally, the FDA estimates losses of approximately 1.1 million blood donors.

“While these new guidelines are aimed at protecting the blood supply, we must also protect patients by ensuring that there is enough blood on the shelves,” said BCP President, Dr. Nora Hirschler.

Further exacerbating the situation is the fact that the nation’s largest blood center, the New York Blood Center, will no longer be able to import blood from Europe and will therefore be importing more blood from other regions of the country, lessening the amount of available blood across the nation. BCP must currently import 25% of its blood from other regions to meet patient needs.

“It is extremely important that those people who are eligible, make blood donation a regular part of their lives,” said Dr. Hirschler. BCP needs more than 500 pints of blood every day for Bay Area patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplantation, and open-heart surgeries, among other lifesaving procedures.

To make an appointment to donate blood at any of BCP’s 12 donation locations or to schedule a blood drive, please call 888-393-GIVE or visit Welcome to Blood Centers of the Pacific Online.

Yeah, they usually have restrictions...

- healthy
- 17+ years of age (16+ in some states)
- weigh 110+ lbs
- have not donated blood at least 56 days
- have not donated double red cells in 111 days
- other health conditions vary... check list when filling out blood donor form

Did you weigh less than 110 lbs at that time?

The first time I donated blood, one guy just finished and went to the back table to get his drink and snack (as required for those who just gave blood). When he was asked what he wanted to drink or eat, he replied... "I'll have..." and fell face flat on the table then fell back out of the chair. A couple other gals who were laying down giving blood panicked and fainted. Me and another friend just sat there chuckling. Heh!

The second time i donated blood, most of the nurses were new at the procedure and had a hard time sticking the needle in the right place. I laid down with the nurse on my left. After sticking the needle in, she realized that she failed. So, she told me to switch positions. I got up and laid back down so she was on my right side. She stuck the needle in and still failed. She called a second nurse to help out. Again, I got up and switched positions again. After laying down with her on my left, she stuck the needle in wrong. Again, I switched positions. A 3rd nurse came along and tried on my right arm... failed. Finally, the head nurse told them all... "Watch me!" She stuck it in perfectly on her first try. She then apologized for all the holes in my arm. Heh!

Well, that's not over... apparently, they forgot about me. Normally, the blood bag at 80% is considered full. In my case, it was just about to hit 100%. The nurse walked up to me and said, "How are you doing?" She then looked down and went, "Oh my gosh! I'm sorry!" and disconnected me from the bag. I was puzzled at first until I saw her pick up the bag. It looked like a huge tight bag that was about to explode. She had to walk away carefully! I must have donated two times as much that day! ;)

I think I was around 105 lbs and I am 5 feet 9 1/4 inches.

I think I was around 105 lbs and I am 5 feet 9 1/4 inches.
That explains.

There's also a height requirement as well, I forgot... but I remember seeing it on a form when I first donated blood. I think it's something like 5'1" for men and 5'5" for women. The reason for this is because of the amount of blood our body needs.

Here's a scenario, suppose...
- a body needs 20 lbs of blood to survive
- a full blood donor is 2 lbs
- 20% of our body weight is blood
- 20% of 110 lbs is 22 lbs of blood
- donate 2 lbs, you still have 20 lbs to keep your body running

If your body was under 110 lbs, your body probably won't be able to handle the blood loss.

really interesting.. I now see better the reason.. thanks for the explanation :)

That's one of the other questions they ask you that's not up front.

When you walk in, they will have a sign that says those rules I mentioned. If it's obvious, they might reject you. Other than that, they will give you a form and one part is like 50 questions related to taking drugs, getting a tattoo, having anal sex, etc.

They also allow you to choose if you want your blood donated or not. For instance, if you supposedly had HIV but didn't want anyone to know why you didn't want to donate blood, you can pick NO and they will withdraw blood making everyone think you donated blood... but the blood won't be added to the blood bank.

I would love to suck Vampy's blood because he's matches my blood type..
Isn't wonderful...

I have not gone donate blood yet.. cuz I'm very very afraid of anybody doesn't match my blood type cuz rare type...

If suppose im end up in the hospital and seek for matches my blood.. reason scared outside of people who have extact my type.. doesn't want theirs.. prefer deaf people's blood type.. I know I'm rude but scared outside who have....

*ack*
