NEW YORK (AFP) - New York property tycoon Donald Trump unveiled his design for "bigger, stronger and better" twin towers to replace the World Trade Center originals destroyed on September 11, 2001.

Denouncing the existing plans for rebuilding Ground Zero as the "worst pile of crap architecture I've ever seen," Trump argued that erecting two new, even taller twin towers was the only valid response to the terrorists.

The consummate self-promoter, known as "The Donald," showed off his proposal just weeks after the official master design was put on hold because of security concerns surrounding the centerpiece 1,776 foot Freedom Tower.

Describing the Freedom Tower as an "empty skeleton," Trump said its construction would be a capitulation.

"If we rebuild the World Trade Center in the form of a skeleton ... the terrorists win. It's that bad," he told reporters gathered in the lobby of his 5th Avenue Trump Towers headquarters on Manhattan.

The design put forward by Trump and his structural engineer Kenneth Gardner, essentially offers a modified version of the original twin towers, erected in the early 1970s.

The replacements would be at least 1,475-feet tall, more than 100 feet higher than their previous incarnations. The new North Tower would also boast a 383-foot communications mast.

"It's bigger, it's stronger and it's better than the previous World Trade Center, and it sets the right tone and the right attitude," Trump said, adding that some members of the public who had seen the model had been moved to tears.

Charles Wolf, whose wife was killed in the North Tower, was more circumspect in his appraisal of the model.

"It spooked me when I first saw it ... the idea of the towers rising again," Wolf said.

"I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it's an interesting idea," he added.

The Trump towers -- he promised not to attach his name to the buildings -- would employ a tube-within-a-tube design with improved fireproofing and larger stairwells.

Gardner said the structures would be able to withstand the kind of attacks that brought down the original towers on September 11, 2001 killing 2,479 people.

I think they should build a memorial for the victims who died there. Just like the ones in Oaklahoma. It will be painful to look at the twin towers if they ever built it and it will bring back the memories.

I think it's meanfuling to build a memorial for the thousands and innoncent victims who died there instead of rebuild twin tower.

Why?
Because it will bring the memories back when they look at rebuild twin tower. No Way.

Come and discuss with us here. :thumb:

Debate with agree to disagree is welcome....

I highly doubt it'll pass. It's just in process (proposed) It will fail anyways, we don't want the same thing over again that was destroyed. It looks bland, boring and very 1960's to early 1970's style.

Yes, it did look bland, boring and outdated. But it also was a symbol of New York City. To be frank, I'll rather have the ol' towers back than the shiny buildings they're working on right now.

I hate these types of buildings even more. Not only to mention that a lot of birds end up dead after flying into it. A very common problem with buildings with a lot of mirror-alike windows.

Trump's design stinks.

Whatever design is used, a memorial must be included. And the memorial must be large, permanent, and respectful.

I don't think rebuilding the World Trade Center Twin Towers is such a bad idea at all, but I don't know what the victims of their love ones ( who were killed ) will feel about this?...The article also said that Donald shows some people out there who had seen his model , stating that some people were moved and in tears....It might be painful to alot of people to look at the twin towers if it was ever rebuild and It might will bring back the horrible memories of those who were killed by the terrorists...

:dunno:

Edit: btw dear Liebling, I didn't vote is cause I'm not quite sure....It would be helpful with some if there was another poll set up for " not sure or undecided " ;)

That's what I thought so, ^Angel^.

I already questioned few of my co-workers about this. They said the same.

They can put a memorial inside the buildings. That's quite respectful even if it's just a big plague, nothing more. At least they are being remembered. No need to make a theme park out of it.

Good Idea.

Admin. and Mod.

Could you please add "I'm not sure" on poll.

Thank you.

Personally, I think they'll think the same whenever they see the Freedom Towers which is being built right now because it's in the same place where the ol' buildings were attacked and destroyed.

Either ways... I don't think it'll make a difference. But do we really need the Freedom Towers?

I meant, with all that windows... people will be picking up a bunch of dead birds everyday.

It got me goose pumps when I look up to rebuild twin towers BECAUSE thousands of people died in that twin towers...

Why should anyone rebuild or get something for "replacement" without think twice that thousands of victims who died because they will never get the poor and innocent victims back as replacement?

You got a point there, I'm not sure Banjo if we do really need one or not... But the idea of building one, I'm not too thriller about it...so I :dunno:

 about the birds, I haven't thought of that one, but good one there Banjo!

Yeah, it might give me the chills ...

Everyone here got good points. ;)

I didn't vote either, I am not sure if rebuilding the twins towers are a brilliant idea or not. :dunno:

I'm also undecided. There are still several thousand people healing from the events of 9/11/01. Perhaps seeing NEW twin towers would have a negative effect on these individuals.

There's no telling for sure, though. I think it'd be a nice idea to modify it some...change it, so to speak, from two buildings to one. IMO, there were only one (two?) Twin Towers and those were the ones destroyed in 2001. Perhaps one building, and a memorial next to it, some kind of a shrine or a wall or something, with the names of the people who were buried within the rubble of the original towers? Kind of as to say "we rebuilt, but the memory is still here."

:dunno: I'm not sure, either.

You have a point, but what if the new twin towers actually does have a positive effect. Like giving people a sense that New York City has been restored.

Hmm, people are bound to have mixed reactions including the 9/11 victims. :-/

A very touchy subject.

I can safely say both points are valid in this case, Banjo...but whether they go ahead with it or not, there is always going to be those who like it, those who don't and those who remain neutral. ;) Such as life!

I do believe that people are getting tired of seeing "nothing" there, though. Went there last summer, and saw the site - I'd much rather see SOMETHING there. Seeing nothing would remind me more of the tragedy itself.

The buildings themselves would serve as the memorial. It is important to show the rest of the world (especially those terrorist bastards) that we are a resiliant country, that we bounce back with a vengence, and that no matter how hard they try to knock us down, their efforts are fruitless because it only makes us stronger. I am all for Donald's vision for the towers. Maybe Banjo should send Mr. Trump a letter suggesting non-mirrored windows for the building to protect the bird population. Whatever is built, it should be bigger and better than what was there originally to send the world the message that we are a strong country and that 9/11 has inspired us to fight back, rebuild, and improve our economy. The attacks on 9/11 killed thousands of Americans, but it also brought us together as a nation, and that is NOT what the terrorists had intended. What could possibly be a better memorial to the victims of 9/11 than to remember them as the inspiration for bringing together this country?
