Do you wear your helmet when riding a bike or chopper?

I did mention boots in my previous post but it doesn't hurt to emphasize it again. :)

Because we have such warm (HOT!) weather here, bikers zoom down the highway in shorts, tank tops, and flip flop sandals (and obviously, no helmets). Yikes!

That is their insane prorogative, though, lol.
I do not know ANYONE who has NOT cracked up on a motorcycle sooner or later: It is just a matter of time, and one had better have as many cards stacked in his favor as possible.

Beo, excellent point in regards to other safety equipment that many people refuse to wear (I cringe too when I see the guy in a helmet but wearing shorts, T-shirt and flip-flops). I first got my motorcyle license when I was 16 and at the time, if you were under 18, you were required to take a motorcycle safety course through the state in order to get your license. It was an excellent class that stressed safety...not just the helmet but the rest of the gear.

I ride year round and in the wintertime, I generally wear a parka that would make an Eskimo sweat. Its thick and I'm well padded. One morning a truck crossed the center line on a turn and I just clipped him...enough to throw me on my ass. I remember sliding on my stomach down the road almost in a superman style. This nice thick parka was torn to shreds where it was sliding on the asphault. I slid maybe 50 feet or so. I walked away from it but it really stressed to me the importance of protecting your skin. People seem to forget that aspault and skin do not mix. Heck, if you are just walking at .5 mph and trip and fall, you will probably lose skin on your knees and hands. Imagine that at 40 mph or faster (heck...even 10 mph causes quite a road rash). I've had road rash before and it is not a pleasant experience..even if its minor road rash.

Oh no! :-o Why can´t America do something to legal the helmut for motorcycles because it´s very dangerous.

All motorcycles require to wear helmuts in Germany because it´s VERY dangerous.

Reba...I'm used to seeing everyone here with helmets on. I still find it strange when I'm on I-95 in your neck of the woods and seeing people without helmets. Its just one of those things that I'm no longer used to seeing here that I have to do a double-take when I see a motorcyclist with no helmet on.

Is it legal to ride the motorcycle without wear helmut in America?

Helmet laws are decided by the individual states and not the country as a whole. In Maryland where I live, Helmets are required. They also have to be approved by the Department of Transportation...not any old helmet will do. Other states, such as Reba's, do not require you to wear helmets. So, it is different state to state.

I don't know how closely people here follow helmet laws, but does anyone remember the confusion in Florida (I think it was Florida). The law did not specificially state you had to wear it on your head. I remember bikers were strapping small, openfaced helmets onto the their legs over their knees. Technically, there were 'wearing' their helmet while riding and I believe a lot of people got off in court when they fought the tickets. I remember thinking how creative it was to skirt the law the way they did.

There aught to be a law requiring married men to wear helmets while their wives go through PMS.

The helmet did good when my-ex was throwing her craft scissors at me.

That winter parka I previously mentioned will also protect you from flying fists, scissors, as well as pots and pans.

no, it is individual state that requires the helmet or not. for instance, my state, Georgia, requires helmets for motorcycles and our next state, Florida, doesnt require helmets.

Thank you for response my post, Taylor and DeafClimber.

It got me goose pimples because the helmut for motorcycle is not require to the law in some of states. Because it´s very dangerous and could be cause severe brain injury.

I have a feeling that because gas prices are sky-rocketting, we will see more motorcycle sales. Read that as being middle-aged guys with no motorcycling experience going out to buy MONSTER cycles. Imagine the carnage.

You might be right about the motorcycle sales. My hubby sometimes thinks about getting another one (it has been many years since the last one).

Most of the "carnage" in our area is from young "wild boy" bikers on Japanese racing cycles. I have seen them doing wheelies, recklessly racing and lane-changing on our highways.

The middle-agers wear color-coordinated safety gear, and their bikes have every fairing and accessorie possible.

The Harley guys and chicks wear a lot of leather (not necessarily for safety), and generally ride their hogs assertively but not recklessly (after all, they have a lot invested in them).

Just my observations; not a scientific survey. ;)

I suppose it will be a while before there is a scientific survey done, but I agree that all we have to go on these days are own own eyes, what we see.
Yup, Reba, I too see the riders being more concerned about their outfits than the rides they have, at stoplights. What wusses they are. It is laughable how they preen and check their clothes, for what, I dunno, maybe godawful insects? A crease they forgot to iron before hitting the adventurous road?
I think you know what I am talking about, Reba. A motorcycle is pretty efficient fuelwise, but I think that a lot of people underestimate the skills required in operating one----it is best that you start with a small motorcycle and work your way up to more powerful ones, equal with your skill. But gee whiz, I swear I see inexperienced guys with Harley Cruisers and I cringe.

Ha, ha. That truly was the way they dressed for motorcycles back then. :D They did wear jodhpur riding pants. Actually, that was rather logical if you think about it. Sitting on a motorcycle saddle was similar to sitting on a horse saddle.

BTW, those people in the pictures are my parents. :)

This is my dad's good friend wearing the only kind of "helmet" that was available during the 40's:

Are you trying to make USA into soviet republican by enforcing others what they must wear?

The fatality rate between hemet and non helmet wearer is about the same! Research already proved in the past 30 years, that is why PA decided to repel that helmet law... More and more states decide to repel the law... Hey New Yorker, when are you gonna repel this stupid law, eh?

I think all states should make everyone wear a helmet for bicycle or a chopper. Cops should enforce this. In florida there is no helmet laws for adults. You must wear a helmet if youre under 16.

Prove it.

So far, every single question I've asked you in the past regarding the claims you've made in different threads... you've dodged them all. So I'll say your credibility is shot here.
