Hi Everyone,

I have been away for a while cos I was in Australia learning AUSLAN. I know some ASL as well. For other members, you would remember that I am moderately severe to severely deaf from birth :deaf: but am fairly new to sign language having been raised oral. Now, as an adult I prefer sign.

Does anyone use Skype? Because it can be downloaded free and is free to use. How do you find it? Is it sufficient for signing?

What are the pros and cons of using Skype? Is it popular?

Anticipating your feedback. :ty:

I am an deaf Australian who is fluent in AUSLAN and ASL, how did you find AUSLAN?

I am a skype user, I use sometimes for the Australian Video Relay Service down here, plus chatting with my friends of course. It is a good program but the speed of the internet is the major concern for these people who cannot afford high speed internet such as ADSL2+

Hello JClarke! I love AUSLAN. I have many DVDs in Auslan now. Which is helpful. When I was in Australia I did use NRS. I am now in Thailand with my husband and kids. Do you know any Deaf Australians who live in Thailand and who use AUSLAN?? I wish there was an international NRS.

Unfortunately, no I don't...no wait, I have a friend from Sydney who is in Thailand on holidays with his girlfriend for a month however I dont know anyone who knows AUSLAN lives in Thailand. NRS is OK, I rather VRS over NRS.

I do use Skype either Windows or Ubuntu (any Linux would do). I had no problem signing to my oldest brother from Washington. Video are pretty average, not smooth and clean but it's better than never.

Skype (or any other webcam application/program) is good for signing with another person.

As long as two people can communicate with each other clearly, then it's fine.

There are some programs that run better on some computers than other computers. There are some programs that don't work well with other programs. So, I would suggest you talk with the person you want to communicate with. Find out what he/she has or can recommend (if it's free) and try it out yourself. :thumb:

Right now I am deployed, and my wife and I use oovoo.com, which is free. I do have skype, but the vid for me sucked, it not smooth enough. mainly cause of my slow internet

I use Skype with my children. It works fine for us.

I have an account but I need to be more active.

Yes, Skype is good. I had that problem a month ago but now I think it's better, I needed to download an old version :P

I am used lots of skype is best :D great is lots of popular I like it :D

I use msn, with a decent webcam and conection,
you can get a nice clear picture. I've been looking
for conference video software(free preferably) and
found a few web sites but I haven't tried them yet.

I have a friend who has a better cam then mine and
same connection and he has a beautiful clear fluid
video. The connection is high speed cable.
