what are your favourite cooking contest shows?
i like MKR its from Australia, its great, also i like Masterchef, the New Zealand version, the english version pisses me off, as we never get to see the semi or the finals.
also do you learn anything from it? what would be your 'project cook' say in the next summer and /or for the mid-winter fest? what do you fancy to be able to cook?

i'd like to try my hands on lamb racks, and lamb shanks, as for deserts i dont know havent thought much on it, maybe those airy, foamy exotics in the martini glass, like sorbets of sorts with some grated ginger or something, id need to buy a special cook book that explains the names and what they are...does anyone know of such books? what would you reccomend?

how do you know what will pick up the dish? hmm whats your favourite tricks?

soory its a lot fo asking, i dont expect all answered jsut giving ideas or how share the raves about this fantastic cooking shows. not typical how-tos, the contest but yeah we do get 'taught' along some of it...its quite good to see how different people shows different cusine skills
 
Love Masterchef!

Like Hells Kitchen. Used to love Hells Kitchen but lately it's gotten so full of drama.

But cooking shows are the only reality shows we watch, and my SO has become so intrigued he's planning on enrolling in culinary school. He has so much left of his Montgomery GI funds to use and time is running out, so he's planning on going! Can't wait for him to teach me all sorts of cooking goodies.

Master Chef, Worst cook in America, Cupcake wars, Chopped, not sure what else...Love to watch it and learn something new! :)

I need to check the recipes from Master Chef. But I am not happy with Chef Rasmey's decision for a winner a month ago I think. Oh well...

Hell's Kitchen is full of BS and dramas etc etc...whine like a baby...I want to stay please please blah blah or blame on other for not doing right etc...full of BS and dramas..pfhht!
 
They are pretty good, but as other poster have stated it is more about drama, sometimes not a bad thing. However, the cooking gets lost in the show.

Honestly, we could use more healthy cooking shows which show how to make good non-processed meals. I liked Giada's show because of the way she presents it, but the food she makes is far from healthy. David Rocco also has a good show.
 
what about Jamie Oliver, he's a terrific cook and easy to follow, though he mumbles but does explains clearly (when you have a cc or subtitles switched on)
Nigelia Lawson is interesting...kinda old fashioned...
 
Couldn't care less about T.V. cooking shows. if I cannot taste it, what's the point!?!?
 
I boycott all reality TV shows! They're on TV because they cost less money than having a show on like 'House'. I wish there where no reality shows on , I hate them as they nothing worth while watching on TV anymore.
 
I like the tv cooking shows and the travel food shows. I also like Deaf Chef online, and youtube's Cooking with Dog. Don't panic. Dog is the host of the show.
Normally cooking is fun.

learn and buy the same ingredients and you can taste it if you do it right, thats the point of it, bUT the cavent is that oftentimes the 'best' onces needs really expensive ingredients...On the other hand, as aforementioned, i stated I like Jamie Oliver because he is a rebel because he believes that cooking should be accessible to all those interested in making great foods without breaking the bank.
While there is Way too many reality shows , agreed, but the contest onces aren't 'cheaply made' because the kitchens are in a designate studio/kitchen , If you had a chance to watch MKR, you'd see the interiors weren't cheap decorations, for it reflects the upper-middle classes people whose cultural interests are in culiary consumption, also if you look at kitchen items, none of these are cheap chinese made junks maybe an odd saucer or two might be but thats about it. So, yes i wrote this 'in defense of cooking contest show's it is slightly different from reality shows...

as for TV on the decline,,,one more need to wonder why reality tv came about, is it because its in competition with internet's availbility of information, maybe it was an excercise initially but turned out alot cheaper to make (agrees on that one)...

I must remind this thread is not intended to be a debate about reality tv shows, and it is more on the realism of cooking contests, as does I think really shows people's skills in cooking, unlike the 'stars' (forgive Jamie Oliver - i still think he's cool, ever watch the "Jamie Oliver 30 Minute Meals"?
its a bloody good one, because in a sense he is rescuing cooking to be for the everyday people not the affluent snobs who can afford the wagyu beefs or vanilla pods...

Lastly, I want to ask everyone to stick to the point, Cooking Contest shows, is not a reality tv, it is probably a strain of it yes but I'd doubt its an excercise in a way to make cheap tv produce, i suspect it is something to do with culture in terms of culitary consumption, theres Always going to be some kind of pros and cons... can discuss that, but try not to wuffle of the track..please...
bascially, if you dont like well made food, and dont cook, and dont watch the shows dont bother replying
 
Ooohhh, closet chef here.

Love cooking shows. Watched Iron Chef America last night and they cook with radish. I cannot wait to try something out with radish.

Love Masterchef, Hell Kitchen, Chopped, Giada, David Roccoco, Michael Smith, Jamie Oliver, The Opener, Guy Rubino, etc.

I make up own dishes just from what is in fridge.

Definitely try lamb rack or shank. Both heaven! <drool> I make grainy mustard coated rack of lamb then make zinfandel reduction for it. YUM!!

ETA: Barefoot Contessa and Rachel Ray 30 minute meal.
 
I used to watch Hells Kitchen but the show is same ole drama. It's like watching re-run after re-run. Same ole shit.

I like watching Rachel Ray cook. :giggle: I just drool whatever she is cookin'.
 
i agree about hells kitchen its not a cooking show anymore its all about gordon ramsey getting away with abuses, they should get rid of him, he is an asshole, pure and simple.
 
Agreed. I watched a few of his shows and couldn't stand him. "F..." this and "F..." that, constantly. Not what I watch TV for.

I like Rachael Ray's cooking segments. She is down-to-earth and practical, and most of her meals seem healthy and yummy, both. She has a fun style and makes it all look easy. I just recently bought a couple editions of her magazine to try out some of the recipes there.
 
yes cooking shows are great, it shows different ways to prepare food to make home life great, i am looking forward to try out lambracks in 2 months time when Uni is over
 
My brother manages the restaurants at the Turtle Creek Casio in Michigan. He produced a few kids cooking shows. I never saw them as they only ran on the local PBS station in his area. I heard they had a lot of fun making the show and the kids LOVED it!
