BEIJING: Chinese police have broken up a gang of deaf teenaged robbers who carried out a string of thefts on the orders a brutal leader.

Leader Yang Song and 11 gang members were sent to prison for term ranging from 11 months to 13 years, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

Yang, 34, formed the gang in 2001 in Shaoxing, in the affluent southeastern coastal province of Zhejiang. Most of the members, who robbed scores of shops, were jobless and homeless youngsters.

Yang regularly beat members of his gang, or burnt them with cigarettes. He even made them do headstands for up to three hours, Xinhua said.

Handicapped people suffer widespread discrimination in China and are often shunned by employers and offered little in the way of special education, particularly in the poor countryside.

The Intermediate People's Court of Shaoxing showed leniency in its punishments because the defendants were disabled and confessed to their crimes, Xinhua quoted court officials as saying.

A specially appointed interpreter took half and hour to explain the 37-page judgment in court, it said.

For decades, China put deaf and disabled people to work doing menial jobs in subsidised factories but many of the factories have gone bankrupt with the decline of the state sector.

good thing I dont live in China anyway...it can be such a horrible and crazy place than you think, really.

they always put alot of criminals in prisons without trying a trial so that's not really fair for the deaf gangs, so they just end up in prison and work in factories and be treated like shit and stuff...I'm not saying that I dislike the Chinese, I'm saying that I didn't like how China turns out to be and how they treat other people, etc...so seriously, if you never visited China, don't. and for any who did, dont visit again either.

This is for your own safety.

why you suggust to not visit china?

i would love to visit china someday to see the great wall. and other historic places.

oh if you want to see the great wall of china SO damn bad, be my guest but seriously, I wouldn't recommend you to TOUCH 'em either...because if you do so, a guard will catch you, and beat you up and take you up to prison and decided if they would let you live or let you die.

this is NOT a joke.

Steel is right about that. If any one from America visit in China, I bet that our government will not help or not rescue them unless they work for government.

It is same thing for people who are victim from a fraud business, and the government will not catch them because these victims are not a "member of government" or they are not agents. This is a major failure. Our government used to help them several years ago.

What about Hong Kong?? Knew that city is a part of China in some ways. So u all can visit there instead of country of China if u feel not secure urself.

Lasza -- Hong Kong is somewhat liberalized/Americanized due to the American businesses sprouting up in the city -- but i personally dont know if it would be more safer for a Deafie to live in and would a Deafie be given the same rights as we have here in the USA even tho its part of China qq

Actually, Hong Kong was liberalized and its business and most citizens in Hong Kong speak English was run by the British. The British used to own Hong Kong for mostly government business, until they decided to let it go in 1997 and be part of China, and the people in China has a long way off to learn how to be in REAL chinese style, you know? It's kind of hard to explain, but most people in Hong Kong speaks better English than anywhere else in China...and most people go to America or Britain for better education and career and stuff like that.

It's hard to say if Hong Kong is a safe place to visit in China, but since it's just small parts of an island, so maybe it's okay but I'm still not too sure because the British don't control Hong Kong anymore.

Where do you get that idea such as beat deadly and government or the embassy will back off? Whoever is register of USA and Embassy know you will be there due protect the USA people.

I don't see any harm if you just do something beside they should have two language since latin language seem be strong and influ around the world. If their army decide to dead beat you up for no reason due Embassy will required the reason before release us to belong that country. Whoever is planning live other countries and will need to register every 4 to 5 years at Embassy that way you won't lose the USA citizen.

Friend of mine went to China and have no problem over there. Import that you know it safe that country has USA of Embassy. Here in American has different countries of Embassy such as Arab, China, and Japan to protect for other due their "law" and our "law" are different. However if thing not get along and that letter will sent to president to deal with that country.

Steel if what you said is true then Mickey Mouse is in jail for building Disneyland in Hong Kong which is now part of China. So are Wally World employees too. Wal-Mart is expanding in China fast. :smoking:

As long as you have friends who live in Hong Kong. Then, you will be not worry about it. Enjoy yourself to visit Hong Kong. I strongly recommend you to visit Hong Kong for your vacation. I never forgot how beautiful cities on the mountains as view. I missed my old friends in Hong Kong. I stayed with my friends for six months which save me alot of money. I only paid food, entertainment and transportation.

Sabrina - Wow, that is very interesting. I get the pictures what you were saying. That was the best idea to make some friends there and save your bucks.

I remember I was in Russia with a group of NTID students and we met deaf Russian people in several places. Surprisely, we were able to understand their face expressions and body language. They are so nice, too.
