DALLAS -- A fire swept through an apartment while a deaf couple slept early today, killing a mother, her 3-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter, officials said.
The woman's husband and their two older boys, ages 6 and 7, escaped with minor smoke inhalation, Dallas fire Capt. Jesse Garcia said.

Smoke detectors went off when the fire started about 6 a.m. on the first floor of the family's apartment, but both parents were deaf and could not hear the alarms, Garcia said. The bedrooms were on the unit's second floor, with the kitchen and living room below.

Fire officials believe the 6-year-old heard the smoke detectors and woke up his parents.

"Otherwise, they would have all been dead," Garcia said.

However, the parents' inability to hear the detectors probably cost precious seconds, he said.

Tyrus Burks helped the older boys to safety, apparently dropping one out a window, Garcia said. But Sephra Burks, 25, never made it to the stairs with 3-year-old Antonio and 10-month-old Biviana.

"She was apparently overcome with the smoke and fell down with her children," Garcia said. "It was a real tragic sight for a firefighter. They were all huddled together."

About 60 firefighters extinguished the blaze within about an hour. Eight apartment units sustained an estimated $100,000 in damages.

Fire officials were investigating the cause.

actually that in Dallas not Houston and those deaf couple is one of my friend, They go to same school with me ofc not in same class. Last time i saw their family was last year before they had a daughter.

OMG so sad! should have had the strobe smoke detectors in every room :(

my heart goes out to the family!

There's been conflicting stories about the smoke detectors.. some media reports said they had strobed smoke detectors that were not in the bedrooms themselves... other reports suggest they had the "hearing" kind but expected the dog to alert them (dog was found dead in the living room). Even more confusing, some articles say that the older children woke the parents up.

We REALLY need to have strobed smoke detecotrs in every room. Unfortunately, the smoke detector companies have a racket and get away with charging $150 for one that requires an electrician to install (more $$) where a hearing person can easily install their own detector for $12.

I've been bugging the smoke detector companies to get with the program and offer us equal access to their life-saving technology. So far, only one company (Kidde) has responded.

yea -- i had filed a complaint years ago with the County's Fire and Rescue Chief (who incidentally happened to be my 2nd cousin now retired) asking him WHY do the deaf county residents have to PAY out of their pockets for hardwiring and shit for the strobes when the county can provide us the plugged in strobes cuz the hearies get their smoke detectors FREE cuz of the taxes -- deaf residents ALSO pay our taxes thus we should be able to get the free strobes for main parts of the house plus the bedroom -- electricians WOULD rip off the deaf customer when they want to hardwire the strobes :madfawk:

Unfortunately, I know the woman who died in the fire. :(
