Deaf, Blind Student Left On School Bus All Day - News

The mother of a handicapped student said her daughter was left on a school bus for an entire day.

Paula Jo Prince said her daughter Dina got on the school bus for Monroe Achievement Center like any normal day. But just after 3 p.m. she received a call that Dina -- who is blind and deaf -- spent six hours sitting on that same bus.

Prince said her daughter has no way of communicating with anyone, so when no one helped her off the bus, Dina just waited for help.

Dina, who is 20 years old, has the capabilities of a 2-year-old.

Prince said the driver did not realize Dina was still on the bus and it was not until the driver returned to take the students home that she realized Dina was still there.

The superintendent of schools said the incident was an error she will not allow in the future.

Prince said she is thankful her daughter is OK but wants to make sure this same mistake doesn't happen to another family.

She said she will not allow her daughter to ride the bus anymore and hopes the prosecutor will file charges against the school.

School officials said the bus driver resigned from her position and is sorry for making the mistake.

I wish the person who wrote the story was a LITTLE more precise in using language. This student is not just deaf-blind.......she's severely multihandicapped! The wording used makes it seem like ALL deaf-blind students are low functioning............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Well, that's the media for you.

I have heard of other stories like that happening to other kids, handicapped or not so my question is why dont the bus drivers establish a routine of doing a bus check daily before their shift is over. I would think that would be a simple routine-like task?

You're right. I don't understand why the driver doesn't do a walk thru of the bus at the end of the shift. A 20-year-old woman is kind of hard to miss if someone just bothers to LOOK!

Hubby is responsible for locking up our church buildings after services. While he does that, I do a walk thru of the main church sanctuary (auditorium) seating areas. I have found purses, umbrellas, books, food, toys, cell phones, PDA's, and--one sleeping child! Someone actually forgot their kid! I think each parent thought the other one picked him up.

People who are responsible for buses or buildings need to open up their eyes, get off their butts and check everything before leaving. :pissed:

Wow! a sleeping child! About parents miscommunicating with each other when it comes to getting kids, that happens a lot!

Anyways, in my opinion, people who tak on the job as a bus driver, they need to realize they are taking on a HUGE responsibility. It seems that some people think the only responsibility is to drive a bus but it is really much more than that. Also, my school provides bus aides for children with special needs so I wonder if Dina had a bus aide?

What? That's not nice...

Hear Again got better grammar than you does.

geez!!!

I think that the driver need to double, sometimes triple check to make sure there is nothing around. At work, I have to double check after closing to make sure that register is put away, coffee machine is turned off, coolers and candy shelf are locked.

I wanted to add, not all Deafblind people are low functioning.. Look at me, I am in college, have a job, etc.... Need to think before judge Deafblind people.. they can be smart.

School Bus Walk-Thru

I don't know about the school district where that girl lives, but where I grew up in Illinois, all the bust drivers must walk through the bus, after every run.

That is not a very good situation. I know that when I was at WPSD. The school buses always got checked before they even left the campus with any empty bus after dropping the kids off every Sunday and then on Friday, WPSD staff made sure nobody missed their bus going home or that one student was even so much placed on the wrong bus. I am sure there were a few mistakes here and there but they were always found before every bus left the school grounds. WPSD staff made sure and they were that so sure. I can't believe a Deaf and a Blind student was left on the bus all day. The bright spot in all of this is that, at least she did not have to go to classes that day.
