A supermarket clerk from Massapequa who admitted he beat and killed his 9-month-old son in 2002 because the infant soiled his diaper was sentenced yesterday to 18 years in prison.
Steven Murphy, 22, who had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, passed up the chance to speak yesterday before Nassau County Court Judge Jeffrey Brown in Mineola. The sentence Brown imposed had been agreed to by all sides.
The baby's mother, Danika Jackson, yesterday said her child's death haunts her each day and she is heartbroken.
Jackson and Murphy lived apart but took turns caring for their son, Kahiem Murphy.
On the early morning of Oct. 31, 2002, Murphy came home from work and went to Jackson's house in Massapequa. Jackson fed and changed Kahiem, and he was sleeping in his crib when she left for work, Nassau Assistant District Attorney Robert Biancavilla said at the time of Murphy's arrest.
Around 12:30 p.m., Murphy called 911 and told the operator Kahiem was having trouble breathing. The infant was taken to Brunswick Hospital Center in Amityville and was pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m.
Murphy beat Kahiem after the baby soiled his diaper, Biancavilla had said. Autopsy reports showed the child was beaten so severely that his liver was cut in half. Kahiem's ribs were broken and his heart and lungs were bruised, Biancavilla had said.
"I hope that your life is hard and I hope that everything that stands beneath you falls," Jackson said in court to Murphy.
Murphy pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on Sept. 26 last year.
"We believed he never intended to kill the child," Biancavilla said after the sentencing.

RIGHT ON gurl!!!!!!
Justice just MAY be served within the confines of the prison walls....who knows? Although, I agree that this man should be serving a life sentence with no chance for parole....
