Magatsu's note: This is really breaking my heart when I read.. I already aware that many of countries neglected Africa problem completely for many years. I would babble bit more to make a point but it will be offtopic. Please read and think carefully...

KINSHASA, Congo -- Even now, as thousands of children die each week from drinking dirty water and not having enough food, and the people of once-thriving communities hide like the hunted in the forests, the Congolese expect little from the world's big spenders.

But as Congo watches the global scramble to raise billions in aid for victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami, many here wonder why Asian suffering stirs action while African suffering is greeted largely with apathy.

The International Rescue Committee, based in New York, said nearly 4 million people have been killed in Congo since the start of five-year war in 1998, most from war-induced disease and starvation. Fighting persists in the county's east, the epicenter of the war, and 1,000 are dying each day, half of them younger than 5.

The tsunami, in comparison, has killed an estimated 150,000 as of yesterday. The disaster was a sudden scourge of nature, while Congo's toll has accumulated slowly, at the hands of man.

"Over the last six years, millions of people have died here from this war," said Kudura Kasongo, spokesman for President Joseph Kabila. "In Asia, they're dying too, and getting money. Why is this?"

"In Asia, Westerners are also dying alongside them, perhaps that's why," Kasongo said.

Led by $810 million from Australia, the victims of the Indian Ocean tragedy have received a total of nearly $4 billion in pledges.

In 2004, Humanitarian aid for Congo was $188 million, roughly $3 per person, the International Rescue Committee said.

"Asia's crisis is temporary, but here we have a permanent catastrophe," said Ingele Ifoto, a government minister who recently headed a program to return 32,000 displaced people from Congo's dense northern Equateur Province. Many were found roaming naked through the wilds, their clothing rotted off.

On Thursday, Gordon Brown, head of Britain's Treasury, called on the world's richest nations to contribute an additional $50 billion to the world's poorest countries, particularly in Africa. Prime Minister Tony Blair described the situation in Africa as "the equivalent of a man-made, preventable tsunami every week."

That's 4 millions for you. Think about it. I have been pondering if I should join Peace Corps/GreenPeace or not to contribute my time... I still am not sure because of school & money.

If you want to join Peace Corps, you need to finish your education first. They only want volunteers who can perform specific services. Since you are majoring in a medical field, you will be much more useful to them if you graduate first. That way, you will have the medical skills that they can really use. Much of Peace Corps work is related to medical and health care development in poor countries.

Ah, I never know that one. I guess PC can wait a bit until I finish my education. Thanks for information!

I applied for Peace Corps and was accepted pending that I graduate first with a BA. I was assigned to go to Ecuador but didn't go at very last minute. Long story but wont go there.

Peace Corps are desperately seeking qualified and well-trained folks as it is growing more and more complicated/dangerous out in the world to serve out 2 years.

My heart goes out to Congo - I feel it is very unfair. Many African countries are suffering. Genocide is rampant there yet we are not doing anything. The world has treated Africa poorly. :tears: :tears:

I completely agree with Reba.
Goodness, we all know there is so much in this world that needs fixing, and I think we are learning here in this forum that shouting alone does not solve things---you just gotta DO it.
Every member of this forum is more valuable than you can individually imagine, let's let it go at that, okay? Reba and I are the old geezers in here, and we are complete opposites in our ideologies, but I know without a doubt in my heart that she will agree completely with me with the opinion that one ought to just DO it, and do it one step at a time.
You cannot change the world alone.
I will add that it pisses me off that there are not more people like Meg, it REALLY pisses me because we NEED more people like her (and others like her), so get off your X-Boxes, dudes, and just wake up.

Yeah man. I want to join.. I always want but Reba made a good point. I have to finish my education first before I can join so they can use me to handle the medical situations. For now, I can donate some $$ to support their organizations and such until then.

Thanks for suggestion and link but no offense, I don't particularly interested in joining any kind of christian organizations or groups. I have had bad experiences with them and I had enough with it. Again, thanks!

Africian Women have too many children and don't have protection like birth control or tube tied. They have no money to pay for it. How can Women protect or unwanted more children? Sound impossible. Also too many africian women and men who have AIDS as spread-out. What about Children? Why not Mother or Father think twice about children and not get AIDS? Or Why not they think of Children who are always Hungry but have no money to buy foods? I just wish something like Doctor can help Africian Women to get tube tied or birth control with free or small charge. It is help for Women to not have too many children or they will die eventually without water and food. It is really sad for me that they have very alittle help from other funds which it is not enough. It been keep same problem years and years. It is never change better life and comfortable. It is always same as struggling and anger with alittle or no help from others. What can We as American help Out of USA like Africian, Asia, Iraq, or others? I just wonder if Out of Usa like Asia, Africian, and others think that USA are very Rich to Donate and Give away Money as Always? What about them? Where are their help us that We have some of problems with Bush lately? Such as CA earthquake, Fla Hurriance, NC Hurriance, and many others. Why not out of usa donate us to help out? But why US? To give away our Money and did they reward us as give money back or donate some? We are Suffer that we give out of money and have more problems with Bush. That s suck!
