I don't know where to put this thread in...I am not sure which forum to put it in so...if this is the wrong place, MODs, please move this to correct forum. Thanks!

Anyway....

I have Central AC...I have never had Central AC before....and one of the vents in my house is leaking some kind of chemical...it is dripping on my carpet, I smelled the carpet and it smells funny. I dunno what to do about it but I am not sure what do do besides speak to management in the morning about it. I am not going to call the emergency management hotline because it is not an emergency--it is just dripping and that is all. But I wonder what to do about it in the meantime. I put a plastic pan under the vent to catch the liquid (it's one of those hospital pans that you puke in) for now. And for now, I've turned the Central AC off for the night and using fans until I can get it fixed. I don't want a big puddle in my carpet in the morning.

So...if anyone knows anything or has suggestions, feel free to post it here.

Thanks!

call an electrician to have it checked out? probably nothing you can do about it right now, and wait until morning to speak with the manager.

I cannot call an electrician-it is the management's responsiblity to fix it and it is in the lease that if something is wrong, I am supposed to let the management use their electrician or plumber or whoever of their choice or their staff to fix it.

I was just wondering if it was supposed to be leaking...I thought it was weird.

I will speak to management in the morning.

Oh right, I wasnt thinking of that. Its beena while since my mom bought a house, so we have to call ourselves if theres any problems, but its nice to be able to handle ourselves sometimes because several years ago, when we were living in an apt, there was a leaking problem in bathtub and toliet wasnt flushing properly, tiles on wall falling apart and more, it was horrible! My mom called the mangament office but nobody came to fix it. My mom got fed up and decided to take pictures as proof and showed to the office and it worked! The guys came next day and fixed everything.

That's terrible!

I am sure the management here will fix it promptly because when my old refrigator broke down they replaced it very fast. I was surprised!

I am not sure if that is a/c coolant but you said it was dripping from vent. is that vent duct or outtake duct? (the one with filter?)

Is the vent close to the central a/c unit?

Good idea to turn off a/c till you inform the rental office in the morning.

I'm gonna make it easy for you and post a pic.

That is the vent where it is leaking, and yes, it has a filter in it but it is not in the picture though because it fell out when I opened the vent.

Oh, and the AC unit is outside. :dunno:

yeah, that's is exhaust vent.. it shouldn't be dripping at all. but weird..

the silvery things looks like a exchange duct.

otherwise, I don't think the fluids is from the a/c itself but from something else like condensation. sometime, condensation can be something than water.

but anyway, I am no a/c repairman LOL but it is something that needs attention of your rental office. they should be notified asap first thing in the morning. so they can have work order out right away and take care of that.

Yeah, I know absolutely nothing about central AC...that's why I took a pic instead of trying to describe it...lol.

I will speak to management first thing in the morning...In the meantime I will leave the AC off and use fans for now.

I am thinking that it may be why my electricity bills have been increasing by about 10 dollars each month since I moved here. First month it was just $40 then next month it was a little over $50 and then my last bill was just under $60...I was like WTF cause I had taken to keeping the lights off when not using the room or not really needing it (I even type in the dark) and keeping the AC temp at 80 (I am very sensitive to cold anyway)...and not using too much hot water...now I think I see why and hopefully it can befixed!

yeah agreed! that could be the cause.. it is working hard to keep your place cool now that you have leak. hopefully your bill go down after that is fixed.

Yeah, that's what one of my friends said...she said that it is working too hard, that I should leave the AC off for 3 days and then turn it back on and it will be back to normal. But I dunno if that will work...And I don't wanna leave it off for 3 days because well I LIVE IN TEXAS!

I rather go ahead and speak to management in the morning...their maintanence staff should know...

Thanks for your help!

I always had a window or wall unit in the past. I hate those because I have to blast them in order for it to cool my apt at all....ugh. I noticed that with Central AC I don't have to blast it at all and I can leave the temp at 80 and it is good enough to keep my place cool and I don't feel too cold from the AC...it feels perfect! And the whole place is evenly cool...not one room hot and one room cool...

right.. here in Az, I set mine to 68°F because the temp goes up into triple digits each day and the sun comes up from east and my windows is facing east even with blinds closed... but the central a/c here is not a real a/c but a chiller type and it is set on auto as well.

What's a chiller type? I never heard of it...

That's great about you got central AC and just alot better than window/wall unit. Our apartment have central AC too.

Some A/C units leak, but they leak outside. Since you said it's central, then you may want to have someone look at it soon. :)
