Census shows whites lose US majority among babies

Actually, you still got it wrong. :lol:

It's spelled, St. Catharines. Often, people who are not from around here would spell it St. Catherines or St. Catherine's instead of St. Catharines. It's just one of these weird names that people can't get right. :lol:
 
Oh! I kept thinking that you thought I left out the "St." part. Ok, now we're back on the same page, phew.

One day my high school English class had a very thorough discussion regarding personal experiences with racism (we were reading the novel The Secret Life of Bees (Monk, 2002)...and I was really stunned by some of the experiences. One girl, who is African American, explained how when she was in middle school, she was with her best friend and her family (they are Mexican) and they went shopping at the local food store that is primarily Spanish. The store manager told her she couldn't come in because the store was only for Hispanic people. She sat outside, in the 100+ degrees while her friend's family shopped. After the class left, I actually had to go to the restroom because I held back tears. I wasn't sure which was worse...the store manager or the family of her friend who let her sit out there, humiliated, while they shopped at the store that blatantly discriminated against this girl. This wasn't the 1940's!

That reminds me....my ex hubby' sister was a manager for Spencer's when she was like 19 or 20 years old. One day at work, a coworker told her to put the camera on a Hispanic couple who were just lounging through the store. She asked her co-worker why and her coworker said "Mexicans steal". She said "Oh that's nice. BTW, I am Mexican and you are fired."

If I recall correctly, I think the coworker replied , "But you don't look Mexican!"


It was over 20 years ago when that happened but that was first of the racist stories I started hearing from people who were close to me.
 
Once I was going to a Deadhead festival in Vermont with a bunch of friends. We stopped in a small town somewhere and couldn't find a place to eat so I decided to go knock on someone's door and see if they might have suggestions. I had to walk up this tall steep wooden staircase to reach someone's door. My friend Felix, a large black woman, was not far behind me. I got to the door first. An old man opened the door when he saw me and as I was about to ask him, he suddenly stepped back and slammed the door. I turned around and saw Felix just coming up behind me.

I looked at her and said "my god, is this the kind of bullshit you have to put up with all the time?" She nodded and rolled her eyes. I apologized right then and there on behalf of the old man. She mimed flossing him between her teeth then tossing him away.

I also see subtler incidences of it like white people preferring to stand instead of sitting between black men on subway cars in NYC.

Arkansas, they're not subtle at all. It's flat out in your face racism.
 
Mmmmmmm.......lets see........NYC subway unoffical rule, don't sit between two people, you might get your pockets picked.......and by people is mean any race and any gender.

rolling7 - If there was a space between two white people, they'll take it. Between two black people, nope. It's not just any race, any gender, this is specific and obvious. And I find it very interesting you say you might get your pockets picked when I mentioned white people preferring not to sit between two black men. Hmmmmmmmm....
 
The truth is we promote racism by having double standards.

There's B.E.T - but if we wanted a White Entertainment Television, there would be riots all over the place. That's double standard. There are black frats but we cannot have white-only fraternity? Does this mean in 15-20 years, B.E.T will be considered racist and we will have...W.E.T?
 
Why can't we celebrate white culture as well? My daughter recently asked me that - there's African American month and Hispanic month...but no Caucasian month. Then she asked me if it was because that the Caucasian race doesn't have culture! Double standard!

That's why I married a Mexican and a Black...so I can have culture. :lol:

Most televisions shows are white people in starring roles with few minorities as secondary characters. In order to balance this out, yes, blacks have their own station so they can actually watch shows that have black people in them, watch shows that's about black people. Fair's fair.

What's interesting about the film that I linked to is that the teacher was trying to get white folks to realize that just because they don't experience racism, it doesn't mean it's not happening to others. i.e. main television networks catering to primarily white audiences. What kind of message is that supposed to send to minorities?
And for the caucausian month thing - we have it every month of the year. Most of us just don't know it.
 
Doubt it! Smart thing is to always stand but if the sub is near empty and you can sit by yourself, sit. The moment any one of any race or gender take a seat next to you, get up....move...protect yourself. Yes, it is very sad that this is what people have to put up with but this is the social culture of today, at least in NYC. subway system. Not everyone riding the sub is trouble but you can not take a chance. So my point is, your assumption that the white person was being racist is not necessarily wrong but you need to re-consider with additional understanding. Unless you daily ride the NYC sub, you can't speak to those who do minds.

Ok, let's look at it another way. What if no black organizations exist whatsoever? What kind of society do you think we would be living in where blacks are not permitted to support themselves and protect their rights as equals? I do not believe there's a double standard to having black organizations.
I do believe it is unfortunate that we have to say the first black president, the first black woman to win an oscar for best acting. The fact that we never said that about whites proves just how racist we are. It's sad that blacks have been in America for over 300 years and it's only now there's finally a black president. or that the oscars have been around for a hundred years and it's only now that a black woman wins an award for best acting.

i look forward to the day that we don't need to point out their race when they are being recognized for the same things whites are because they're finally really equals and on par and the skin of their colour does not preface their accomplishments because it's not such an issue for whites anymore. Until we stop saying the first black anything, we're still a racist society.

What's double standards to me is white people so used to living the white way that when anyone dares to promote their own race and protect the rights of their race being equal to whites and as deserving and as entitled as to the same things as whites that they get slammed with the double standards labels.
