Census shows whites lose US majority among babies

Doesn't make it right? Omitting it doesn't make it right either. I don't think you understand why people use air quotes.

Just like people shouldn't use the word, n-i-g-g-e-r in a quote even though it was said? We have to repeat the offensive terms because that's that we hear sometimes. If we change it, we are not just omitting it, but also changing the impact of these quotes. I'm not afraid to use these terms in quotes or discussions, I don't use these in an offensive manner. I don't call anyone by these names, they are merely used in quotes or to make a point.

Somebody actually said, "These damn ragheads are taking our jobs away" to my face. So why should I sugarcoat and replace the word with something else more... politically correct when in fact that's what was said?

I do understand the "air quotes" now, Banjo....

True dat....I understand his "air quotes" now....
That's good. Although I don't know why he called them air quotes. They were just plain old quotation marks. Air quotes are when a person makes the quote gestures in the air with their fingers. When they're written, printed, or typed they're just quotes. :)

Really? In what context? I've never heard anyone say that. :dunno:

I have heard it on many occasions at a place I used to work at. Unfortunately, the supervisor was rarely around to catch them, and whenever the supervisor was present, nothing was done anyway.

Foxrac, you say that you have no issues with race relations, right? Do you think maybe it is because you are white and don't really understand what it is like to be in the minority race? I have been married to a Mexican and now married to a black man. Through them, I see a lot of race relations problems. Just because you don't experience it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I had no problems with race relations growing up and thought it wasn't a big issue in this country. Well, sadly it is and it is usually with white law enforcement or in the corporate world. My ex and my current hubby had to work twice as hard to break the stereotyping and also both were unfairly targeted like getting questioned about what were they doing in certain neigbors or getting questioned about whether they own their vehicles. It does happen.

Yup, as adult, I don't experience any race relation issue but as teen, I did experience the race relation issue, usually between white and black at high school. Some black students called nasty racist words to whites and it was so crazy. Based on my experience, race relation with between white and black are much better in the southern states than in west coast so no idea about east coast like DC and NYC. I believe that situation with race relation can be person to other person, even some minorities don't experience any race relation, some does, even some whites too.

I only know about race relation on between Latino and blacks in CA are not very pretty, especially on teenagers and young adults that they got opposite from others to others.

How is this for a fact, in the NBA (National Basketball Association) a white player who uses a black racist slur (the "n" word) is fined and suspended. Any player that uses a gay slur (the "f" and/or "q" word) is fined and suspended. However, using white racist slur will get nothing. The NBA uses video, along with witness but video is enough, a payoff. They don't give a damn if an expert lip-reader as myself caught the use of the slur on TV and don't take input from the pubic, which I've tried to do.
Well, keep sending those letters of protest. Specify the time/date of the offense. My guess is that the player that was slurred did not let it bother him. Why should you?

Banjo is 100% correct that we should and must quote word-for-word as-is but tell that to the MM, which will edit as they please to "protect" themself (bunch of hogwash, if you ask me).
Why not contact the only news group you trust, FoxNews, and tell them about the offensive anti-Caucasian remarks you witnessed in the NBA?
I remember going to NHL games when I had better hearing. The things that I could hear during the game would make most people cringe. I don't recall any uproar, but this was the pre-Fox days. When they carried the US broadcasts on Fox, I still do not recall any issues.

I saw a documentary of Jane Elliot conducting her Brown Eyes/Blue Eyes workshop in Regina, Saskatchewan. That was very very illuminating for she shows how even white people who think they are not racist are racist. A couple of them even walked out after she treated them the same way natives are treated by talking down to them and treating them like they were stupid or unworthy. Anyone ever seen any films of her workshops?

you are saw already Saskatoon, Regina!

how do you know Saskatchewan! interesting

I've never been to the Prairies but I've heard many stories that the Prairie provinces, to put it politely, is very conservative.

I still don't understand what you mean. You saying there are too many cultural centers for native people?

Yeah but how come no one complains about too many white people? I met quite a few natives who moved to my city from the Prairies because racism there was so bad. Even white people from the Prairies admitted that was very true.

I hail from St. Catharines, a famous city known for its underground railroad. We used to have a large population with African origins. However, it has greatly dwindled since then. There are barely any here nowadays. Mostly, just Caucasians. Although we do have a growing population of Arab origins, but it's not growing that fast anyway. The city is rather conservative if you ask me.

St Catherine's, Ontario?! My father and his family moved there from Europe after WW2. They bought a fruit farm that I used to visit every summer, they would hire workers from the Caribbean to pick their fruit. My grandparents passed away but my uncle still lives on the farm.

Actually, St. Catharines, not Catherine's, a very common mistake the outsiders often make.

They still hire a lot of people from the Caribbean to work at the farmers these days, though Mexicans are becoming more popular nowadays.

I did say St. Catherine's :) - it's even in your quote :P

Maybe the Mexicans were originally from Georgia ;)

:hmm: I must confess, I'm not sure what you are getting at. Are you making a humourous reference to the name of the city? Meanwhile, here's the official city website just in case you wanted to learn a bit more about the city.

HOME - St. Catharines

Sorry for asking you, I just want to avoid any confusion on the subject. :)
