Sorry to hear that your hearing is going down hill so fast. Have you tried hearing aids first. From what I read from other threads, CI is benefits only if hearing aids don't help. Wish you good luck.

Also I'm wondering with CI, does it help to catch words what was being said without lipreading. Anyone can answer to this question also?

It would be depend on each person with CI. It take time after it is hooked up and get use to the sound etc etc.

I would suggest you to go see Audiogoist.

The answer to the first question about music...yea, I listen to music all the time especially at work. Typically, it is music from the internet and it sounds great.

To answer the second question about hearing words without lipreading, yea I do it all the time. It is to the point that my lipreading skills have really diminished significantly and I have difficulty doing so without my CI on. Essentially, I don't lipread anymore.

LT is correct. It really depends on the person and there is a wide variance how people utilize their CIs.

Very interesting ... thanks for response here ... I'm curious .. were you able to hear some before CI (with or without hearing aids, if any)?

LT .. yes it's true that it's depend on the person. I'm curious about it in general from their experience. Thanks.

Yes me too. Since I don't have CI yet. I hope soon though!

My daughter also can understand without having to lipread. The lipreading definately helps in noisy situations and in the bathtub. She loves music and will actually sing a few versus from her favorite songs on the radio. Although in the beginning she did not like the radio at all, so i would keep it off when driving until one day out of the blue she asked me to turn it on and ever since then she enjoys it so much. It's different for everyone and it just depends on the individual.

...

I was HOH from birth. Started with a HA since three years old. I had enough hearing with my HA to be able to learn spoken language and speak it well. I did have to have speech therapy until I got to JH school (I was also mainstreamed third grade on). So, you can see I had developed all the tools required to be very successful with a CI once it became necessary.

I spend time every evening talking to Lilly with her processor off so she can lip read a little bit. With her processor on, she does not need to lip read. I can talk to her while my back is turned to her. I talk to her in the car when I am driving. She understands every word that I say without seeing my mouth.
As far as music, she hears it, and loves it. I hear her singing in the back seat of the car. For a while, she went through a phase where she wanted the music loud, very loud. So loud that I blew a speaker in my truck. Recently, she doesnt want it as loud, but she still sings along.

I can appreciate music, but I'm so visual that music means little to me...

I would say "Yes" but music APPRECIATION is not universal in CI recipents. I listen to music all the time with my Freedom, and hook it up to my MP3 player using a personal audio cable so I can enjoy my music without bothering anybody else around me (great for riding on a bus/train!).

Thanks for response. I'm alike you, grew up oral, school mainstreamed and speech therpy. Altho I can hear without hearing aids in low sounds only. That was why I can understand men then women! haha ... With hearing aids, I was able to hear high sounds but too much power on low sound (hear more then what dog can hear) which it's not good. Alway got severve headaches. When I was grew up I was told I have problem with inner ears whatever what's that mean. When I was at NTID back in 1975, they loved to have me on research because my case was very rare. In my case, I'm one of three (out of thousands) have that kind of problem in its history at that time. When I was grew up, my mother used to take me to specialist every five years to update the research to see if any surgery has more then 80% successful in my case. Back then, it was never did then my mother passed away back in 1978 then I never went to check it out myself. Oh well. Perhaps now I'm too old. I haven't wear hearing aids for a long long time.

sr171soars ... thanks for letting me know about your experience, I appreciated.

Wonderful and very pleased to hear Lilly's CI has been very successful. Yes it was worth to have CI.

Music...yes
lipreading necessary....hardly at all. I don't look at people talking so much anymore. Much more relaxing to converse. :)

current technology like Cochlear's Freedom and Advanced Bionics' Auria and upcoming Harmony will help wearer enjoy music to some degrees.

I have been enjoying musics for 3 years on Auria and looking forward to harmony to experience lot more than I have with Auria.

Harmony?! I don't see anything on the AB website about this. *now very curious*

Yep, that is correct. Now that they have a pretty good handle on speech, they are starting to broaden the scope of CIs to be more inclusive of all around hearing especially music.

Not on website yet but AB did mention about upcoming new processor without the revealed name: HiResolution Bionic Ear Cochlear Implant System -- with the AURIA BTE It is actually a 120 channel BTE.

and if you have been following some post in CI Group on Yahoo, you will notice there were a webenair (web based seminar) held by AB that had a show and tell about Harmony so I think there is a transcript available now.
ci : Do you feel like your walking the twighlight zone between the deaf and hearing worlds? The ci maillist is for everyone interest and see the latest entry (posted today)

Michael Chorost also explained about the new 121 channels on his website when he was on the trial for that new programs. Michael Chorost see June 17, 2006: entry about his article in Wired magazine.

cheers :D

Yes, indeed.....just as with hearing aids, not everyone hears the same with CI. There is good news, and that those who are late deafened tend to get the best use out of a CI.
