Can Obama save Detriot?

unfortunately, detroit's economy is so poor and their city so run down that no large businesses want to take the risk of setting up shop there.

it's similar to the problems milwaukee, wisconsin has. they used to have breweries 30 years ago which helped stimulate their economy, but after they all left in the 70s and 80s, the city suffered as a result. a few large, reputable businesses have taken their place, but they don't have as much of an impact as the breweries did.

Of course. I have been to Detroit metro area before when I went to visit my ex gf's family. I am aware that Detroit is very poor and has very high crime (one of the highest in the US).

that's true.

if i remember correctly, detroit's population is 97% african-american and 3%caucasian.

milwaukee's population has shifted from caucasian in the 50s and 60s to mixed african-american and caucausian in the 70s and 80s to african-american, latinos and hispanics in the 90s and today.

the mayor of milwaukee is trying to encourage population growth by building expensive condos near the lakefront in downtown. while this has increased the population some, it is not enough to make up for the city dwellers who used to live in the area over the past 30 years.

Detroit has around 80 percent blacks, not 97 percent. The rest are arabs, whites, mexicans, etc.

for some reason, i always thought the african-american population in detroit was higher than 80%.

I know around 80% blacks like sequioas said.

It was in 2000 but it's very possibly more than 80% for this year estimate.

I don't think Obama would save Michigan, Detroit.

Anyway I will ask my beautiful-lovely lady who grew up from "CHEESE STATE" about Milwaukee issues what you mentioned.. She will re-educate me about Milwaukee's history and stuffs.

i'm from the milwaukee area (suburbs). i was born and raised here, so i know what i'm talking about. :)

Detroit?

I would think that Obama has more pressing issues than to save Detroit.

Afterall, if Detroit can't save itself--why should the President step in?

exactly. if obama were to step in to save detroit, next thing you know the entire country will be asking for help.

Take a look at how bad Detroit is:

The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit

I feel so sad seeing the ruins of those car factories that brought glory to Detroit. As a kid I dreamed of moving to Detroit and working at one of the factories, but reality hit me square in the face.

Detroit is truly the heartbeat of American industry. What is OUR automobile identity WITHOUT the Big 3? Toyota? Honda? Nissan? Hell they dont belong in fucking-a Detroit. Ford, GM and Chrysler REPRESENTS us Americans in the battle for every customer around the globe. Lose the Detroit 3, what is our standing in the automotive world? .....ZERO!

The Europeans will be unhappy because if GM collapses, Opel and Vauxhall dies too. Even GM's death will end up killing Holden out in Aussieland. Even if something happens to Ford NA, Ford Europe and Asia plus Mazda and Volvo all will catch that cold from NA Ford.

I read your post about your dream made me feel sad... Yes Detriot is soo beautiful place..

I recall that movie called american ganger, the leader walk in store and looking many imports on shelf. the leader told his guard, saying "see many asian imports put american workers out of job".

Anyway I wondering if GM will be sold to Mexico like Mexico make Volkwagen cars after gremany sold equpment and factories.

GM has factories in Mexico (Ramos Arizpe, Mexico that builds Chevy HHR and Saturn VUE plus Silao, Mexico doing Cadillac Escalade EXT, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Avalanche and GMC Yukon XL ) I dont think GM will be sold to any foreign outlet. Most likely another American investor might take a chance..who knows?

Hell my ZX2 Escort was built in Hermosillo, Mexico. So saving Detroit is like saving both Canada and Mexico! Even my old Dodge Neon was made in Toluca, Mexico too.

and oh BTW Volkswagen is gonna have a factory in Chattanooga, TN! I'm a gonna apply to work for VW there after all :)

My 1995 Jeep Cherokee was made in Mexico.

BMW makes cars in Greer, SC.

:dizzy:

Even there are some Hondas made in Mexico and Canada, also! My 1994 Honda Civic that I used to have was made in Canada, but my 2000 Honda Civic which I don't know as I haven't checked.
