LONDON: One of the two children who brutally murdered British toddler James Bulger 12 years ago has become a dad.
London's Sunday Mirror newspaper reported that Robert Thompson - who was 10 when he and Jon Venables kidnapped, tortured and bashed the two-year-old to death - had had a baby with his girlfriend in the past 12 months.
Thompson, originally from Liverpool, is now 23 and lives in a secret location in the north of England using a pseudonym. It is believed the baby's mother does not know of his past.
They split up before the baby was born but the newspaper said Thompson regularly visited the child - whose sex and name cannot be revealed - at the mother's home. A source close to the case told the paper: "The child is angelic, a real beauty. Thompson is thrilled to have become a father and is determined to be a good dad.
"But it is a bit chilling to think of him becoming a father after what he did. He must still be considered a risk to children, despite showing remorse for killing little James. Social Services have been keeping a close eye on things.
"The trouble is that they have their hands tied because of the law. Nobody is allowed to do anything to reveal Thompson's new identity. So no one can tell the former girlfriend the truth about the father of her child."
The relationship was his first serious one, although in 1999 he was close to a girl also held at Barton Moss secure unit in Eccles, Lancashire.
In 1993, Thompson and Venables stunned the world when they abducted and murdered James. CCTV showed them leading the toddler away at the Strand shopping centre in Bootle, Liverpool.
They tortured the toddler as he screamed for his mother, showering him with bricks and stones before beating him to death with an iron bar.
The boys, both 10, poured model aircraft paint on his body and placed it on a railway line. James was run over by a train, which cut his body in half. The pair were sentenced to be held at "Her Majesty's pleasure" and were released in 2001.
The Sunday Mirror said Thompson had been in trouble with police for alleged shoplifting since being released.
He is also reported to have taken heroin.

ONE of the sadistic murderers of two-year-old James Bulger has become a father, it was reported yesterday.
Robert Thompson's girlfriend gave birth to the child within the past 12 months but it is understood the baby's mother has separated from him after a series of arguments.
Thompson, 23, has been living under a secret identity since his release from British jail nearly five years ago and his girlfriend was unaware of his part in James's horrific murder.
In February 1993, Thompson and his friend Jon Venables, then 10, abducted James from a crowded shopping centre and took him across Liverpool to a railway line where they tortured and battered him to death.
Later that year, Thompson and Venables were ordered to be locked up indefinitely, but in 2001 both were released with new identities after eight years in detention.
The news that Thompson has a child of his own has angered James's family.
Last night, his mother Denise Fergus accused Thompson of still being a risk to children.
The public has been allowed to know little about the new lives of Thompson and Venables because of a High Court injunction that protects their identities.
However, the pair - who is said to have been forced to move repeatedly to stop their identities being discovered - are prevented from returning to Merseyside.
Thompson is believed to be living elsewhere in the north of England and working in an office after overcoming a heroin addiction.
Last year, Ms Fergus claimed to have tracked him down after a tip-off, but she did not confront him.
Thompson and his girlfriend are said not to have planned the pregnancy. They had intended to raise the child together, but parted.
However, he is said to make regular visits to see the child - whose name and gender cannot be revealed for legal reasons - and has pledged to provide for the child.
