A Very Costly Kiss: Senior Denied Diploma

For teens, there is no greater joy than graduating high school. Shaking off the shackles of education and claiming that hard-fought diploma is truly an epic day. Unfortunately, for several students at Bonny Eagle High School in Maine, their natural exuberance has led to some surprisingly serious problems.

On Friday night, when the senior class was waiting to graduate, excitement began to grow. Students bounced a large inflatable rubber duck. The noise level rose. And then came "the kiss." When called, one student walked on stage to receive his diploma and blew a kiss to his family. The school administrator, clearly not the sentimental sort, sent the student back to his seat ... sans diploma.

The seemingly harsh punishment has sent the Web all aflutter. Searches on "student denied diploma" and "bonny eagle high school" are both through the roof. Additionally, blogs and news papers are chiming in with opinions on whether or not the administration overreacted. The student's mother has given interviews and is quite upset at her son's treatment. According to an article from Fox News the outraged mother said, "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior."

But the administrators feel they were just enforcing the rules that students agreed to. At a meeting following the debacle, school superintendent Suzanne Lukas said that "if a student doesn't adhere to the expectations, then the consequences are clearly spelled out."

This isn't the first time that rambunctious (dare we say "fun"?) behavior affected a graduation ceremony at Bonny Eagle. "Four years ago we had some issues with silly string and beach balls," said Lukas.

LOL, and "incident with silly string and beach balls"--those are mandatory for HS graduations!!!

Hell, when I graduated, people were smoking joints and sipping from flasks in the back rows.

What a bunch of tight asses.

She deserved what she got! Yep, yep!

*note the sarcasm*

hm? I blew kisses to my family when I graduated and got the diploma. This doesn't make sense.

Jeesh! They're so uptight!!!! what a a$$hole, that he took a student's diploma just because a student gave a kiss to his family!

Saw that today...

School Districts at work, Kids are being withheld of academics awards due to nonsense.

Childrens academics awards, or school work grades, should not be withheld due to the "misbehavior" that the school feels and decides on.

Nothing burns me up more than the education system putting a child's education and academics at risk because, they do not like what they see.

School district should not be able to strip a child from what they have already academically earned...

For crying out loud! His whole life works is being withheld. His H.S. Diploma!

the school superintendent Suzanne Lukas seriously needs to reconsider her stance or face a costly lawsuit and also public embarrassment that will lead to her resignation.

it's her choice - her job or diploma

no it doesnt have to be this way, BULLSHIT

this is so seriously fucked up. I remember a guy I knew in school who graduated a year after I did (1991). Once he got his diploma, he flipped the bird to the audience. Brian did witness that incident as he was in that graduating class. That guy did get the diploma, but he only got a one year ban on visiting the campus.

WTF?

Seriously, I don't see any harm of one blowing a kiss to the crowd after recieving the diploma. The administration should loosen up a little bit.

Here's the YT Clip of the Graduation Controversy (unfortunately it doesn't have the closed captioning on it)

Lately, we all have been noticing more and more of schools and administrators taking control of students in school with the ridiculous rules. When these students passed all the grades and they deserve the diploma. At the ceremony, there is a good reason for students to celebrate with family and friends, the ridiculous rules really spoiled their day and their families too. This is really absurd and I hope they win the fight to get their diploma they deserve. Today's the schools are becoming stricter with silly and ridiculous rules they make and controlling students what they should do or not to do. For example a ban of hugging, hand holding, to name a few. I would not be surprised to hear more controversy to come in the future.

Sparking old memories here.....I almost lost my diploma....for kissing my boyfriend at the Senior Prom!....The Dean told me (in his office) to "pack my clothes" and get ready to go home!...But...I would not get up from that chair! The supervisor on my dorm floor, along with the Dean, tried to "pry my fingers and azz from that chair"...but I would not bulge!

So....I was "campused" until graduation day! And when I got that hard-earned diploma in my hand....walked outside...and gave them all the "finger"! I may have been what they thought "a wild child"...but that diploma was mine and mine alone! I earned it!...And I've never been back!!!

Don't worry the supt. will have State Board of Education on his ass shortly. She will likely have her administrative license revoked for one academic year from this debacle.

Hmmm...seems like racism could've been involved in this part.

If that is part of the situation, wow...that is VERY extremely unfair. He worked hard as hell at school and this is what he gets?

Seriously this is getting out of hand. banning on kissing, hugging, or even eye contact is seriously out of control. They are abusing their power.
