Is how topics like abortion and gay marriage is considered important issues. These are things that affect a small minority of people yet theyre considered major issues.

Theyre like a smoke screen that covers the real issues that affect everybody.

btw I am for gay marriage and prochoice.

But if these groups never get the attention, they never get what they want/need. They will continue to be oppressed and denied equal opportunities. You saw what happened when gay people started the movement for marriage rights; they were denied left and right and this had to take court intervention to make it legal for them to have equal rights. They weren't asking for your permission, they were asking for a legal right to get married.

It's the same for deaf people. We are in the minority, right? Our issues may not be important for everybody else, but we definitely got attention and we got our rights and opportunities. If we hadn't been publically loud, we wouldn't have captions now. Or interpreters. Or ASL in schools. Or job opportunities.
