Baby dies after left in truck
Baby dies after left in truck | News - Home

SUGAR LAND, Texas -
A 7-month-old died Thursday after the baby's father left the baby in a pickup truck all day while he was at work, Sugar Land police said.

The father made the discovery at his home in the 14000 block of Mary Sue Court and Jo Ann Lane in the Covington Woods neighborhood.

Sugar Land police said the dad dropped off his elementary school-aged kids at school, but apparently forgot about the baby. Police said he then went to a conference on Highway 290 at the West Loop in northwest Houston.

He came home at about 5:30 p.m. Police said that was when his wife called to ask about the baby and he made the discovery.

"You cannot manage it unless you've gone through it yourself," Sugar Land resident Gary Piet said. "It's a sad case."

Sugar Land police are investigating. A decision on whether charges will be filed has not yet been made. The case will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office.

Tips To Prevent Tragedy

According to Kids and Cars, this case is not uncommon.

In 2010, more than 1,000 children were left alone in cars. Of those, 239 of the children died, including 83 in Texas.

Child safety experts have tips to prevent this from happening.

1. Put something you have to have with you, such as a purse or briefcase, in the back seat next to the child that forces you to check the back seat.

2. Put a stuffed animal in the front seat as a reminder that your child is in the back.

How could he forget about his baby in his pick-up truck all day? He didn't even notice the baby when he got back into the truck and drove home after work? WTF? How sad!

That's very sad. There are stories like this one at the beginning of summer every year.

Charges need to be made on that father! There is no excuse for his forgetfulness. I can't forget my own kids and I am not sure what he is up to.

Wow, prior to implement of airbag in vehicles, most families put babies in front seat to help them to remember wherever child is left but we cannot anymore due unsafe with airbag that could cause fatal. My mother forgot to got me when I was 3 years old while my mother was shopping at grocery while I was slept in back seat. After I woke up and puzzled about where is my mother so I started cried for several minutes until my mother finish the shopping and return to car. My mother started feel bad about I was struck in car and the outside isn't hot, after that, she started force me to sit in front seat until got new car with airbag in 1994.

I've never forgotten my children in the car....It's against the Law to leave a child under a certain age alone in the car while you do shopping or whatever,,,not even for a minute! So many kidnappings, deaths, etc.

Perhaps the man was in a hurry and the baby was asleep, but whatever the reason, it's against the Law.

I've forgotton my doggie in the car once....for about an hour, when I noticed she wasn't around, and I said "where is the dog"?...I realized she was still in the car and ran out there for her...she looked at me quizzingly as to say...."what's up, mamma"?....
