SUGAR LAND, Texas -
A 7-month-old died Thursday after the baby's father left the baby in a pickup truck all day while he was at work, Sugar Land police said.
The father made the discovery at his home in the 14000 block of Mary Sue Court and Jo Ann Lane in the Covington Woods neighborhood.
Sugar Land police said the dad dropped off his elementary school-aged kids at school, but apparently forgot about the baby. Police said he then went to a conference on Highway 290 at the West Loop in northwest Houston.
He came home at about 5:30 p.m. Police said that was when his wife called to ask about the baby and he made the discovery.
"You cannot manage it unless you've gone through it yourself," Sugar Land resident Gary Piet said. "It's a sad case."
Sugar Land police are investigating. A decision on whether charges will be filed has not yet been made. The case will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office.
Tips To Prevent Tragedy
According to Kids and Cars, this case is not uncommon.
In 2010, more than 1,000 children were left alone in cars. Of those, 239 of the children died, including 83 in Texas.
Child safety experts have tips to prevent this from happening.
1. Put something you have to have with you, such as a purse or briefcase, in the back seat next to the child that forces you to check the back seat.
2. Put a stuffed animal in the front seat as a reminder that your child is in the back.
