Atlanta manhunt moves beyond carjacked Honda
Officials fear suspect in three killings may have taken a hostage

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Security camera images from inside a parking garage have given investigators their latest lead in the hunt for a man wanted in the courthouse killings of a judge, a court reporter and a sheriff's deputy.

But the photos failed to show how he made his getaway.

The suspect, 33-year-old Brian Nichols, is wanted in the shooting deaths of Judge Rowland W. Barnes, court reporter Julie Ann Brandau and deputy sheriff Hoyt Teasley.

The nationwide manhunt for Nichols shifted focus late Friday with the discovery that the 1997 Honda Accord police had earlier thought was used for the getaway, was still in the garage where he carjacked it from a newspaper reporter after the courthouse shootings.

The garage's lower level exit gate, used only by parkers with monthly passes, was broken and detectives told CNN they believe Nichols crashed through it after taking another car on that level.

But they have not ruled out the possibility that he may have walked out of the garage.

A series of photos taken by two stairwell cameras show a shirtless Nichols putting on a jacket apparently taken from the reporter as he walked to a lower level and disappeared.

No camera was in position to capture what happened when Nichols exited the stairwell.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan says the fear now is Nichols may have taken another vehicle, and its owner as hostage, soon after abandoning the Honda.

I've just watched CNN this morning where he broke in an apartment and took someone hostage but a group of SWAT and other organizations followed him there and caught him already.

He was kind of close somewhere near where one of my aunts lives in Alanta.

pretty creepy.

Yeah, Steel.
What is ESPECIALLY creepy is that there was a firearm in the courtroom to begin with.
I am still scratching my head over this. From what I have seen, firearms were never present during court proceedings, and it seems a no-brainer. I mean, if the deputy had checked in his gun, it would never have been grabbed, and none of this would have happened.

They have him in Federal custody now. That is a relief.

Also, I don't understand why they didn't have more officers present in the court building. Somebody has some explaining to do.

Don't know yet if Nichols also killed the Customs agent.

nichols already captured. no questions about that. no RS there will be no lawsuits against cops.

yeah...lawsuits.

whoo-dee-fuckin'-doo!

when you get caught and arrested, there will ALWAYS be a lawsuit. what you think they should do to him? set him loose and go on continue shooting more people, hijacking cars, and even do some more raping?

This man is NOT well and he obviously has serious metal problems.

He has faced more charges than ever and I wouldn't even be surprised if he has to be on the death row.

If he was charged for rape, and found gulity, but the person he raped is still alive, then he proably would just stay in jail for life but he made things MUCH worse by shooting the judge and other people so he's in a much deeper hole of shit so He already ruined his life enough and would definetly have to face the death row.

*sigh* life is so damn strange these days...

Nichols will also face Federal charges because they are charging him with the murder of the ICE agent.

I mean Lawsuits will be filed against the sheriffs dept cause the deputy didnt keep his gun locked. If we all citenzens have to follow gun laws buy keeping guns on a lock in our homes and there should be a law that all law enforcement officers should keep their guns locked as well.

That is what is so screwed up with this whole thing. He was caught with weapons...he had made threats against the prosecutor (they are still investigating a phone call to the prosecutors office they believe was Nichols). Everyone had requested tighter security and their claim is that security was tighter. If it was tight, why would they only have one deputy escorting this subject who is not cuffed? I don't agree with the no cuff/no shackle policy, but I can see why that is in place. If it is something they have to follow, then they will need the manpower to make up for it.

only the bailiff can have the weapon in the courtroom. I dont know how Nichols somehow managed to get the gun from one of the people in the courtroom. before he killed 3 people now it been up to 4 people cuz he killing the immigration officer.

yep.

3 people in the courtroom and one outside, who was an immigration officer...4 people and it might be 5 if he killed a woman whom he took hostage at the apartment complex, but the woman turned out to be okay, anyway.

(actually, it would be 6 since he nearly killed a man while pistol whipping him, threatening him that he'll kill him if he doesnt give him the car keys but he survived from the attack also)
