I am in the process of slowly saving up to make a downpayment on a newer vehicle this fall. Likely a 2000-2002 year model, somewhere in that range. I am leaning heavily towards the Jeep Liberties. I know they are small, but they look alot better than those Geo Metros running around. Plus I would like to get one with 4 wheel drive capabilities as the roads here can get bad in the winters.

How is the handling?

Does it want to roll when you go around a curve?

Is the back seat big enough for a toddler size booster/child seat?

What is the cargo space like - in other words can I fit a weekend camping trip back there??

what is the gas mileage on them?

Is the insurance expensive on them?

What are the typical maintenance costs? Will I have to go to a Jeep dealer specifically to have it serviced?

What is the overall feel of the vehicle?

I know this a godzillion questions but I want to make sure that this is what I want to drive for the next 5-6 years.

Friend of mine have it, said 2007 is much better than older model year. That is for gas mileage 24-26 in city/hwy, and smoother highway drive. It is successor to Jeep Cherokee, LT and I are considering about trading our Jeep Cherokee with liberty, OR maybe Grand Cherokee. We are sticking to Jeep because we don't have any trouble with it for 5 years already, even after 4 accidents! About insurance, I am not sure because it varies from location to location and who is the driver are. Jeep CAN go off road if it is trail rated. I would recommend sport because they got excellent steering shock control. Once you get in Jeep, you will understand. I am sure Reba would agree with me.

Jeep is easy to get parts, and can be serviced anywhere, and there is parts/accessories available for Jeep.

If you can't afford gas, don't bother Wrangler even though they are attractive, but their gas isn't.

Dixie, the best thing to do is test drive one for yourself, including with the car seat.

Ask your insurance agent about the cost.

Don't trust the posted gas mileage figures. They usually estimate them better than they really are. That's true about all car models. But you can get a relative comparison from the figures.

The Liberty is more spacious than it appears from the outside.

I hope someday to get a Jeep Patriot when it's time to trade in my Cherokee. The basic size and configuration are similar.

I agree! Jeep got nice line ups on these SUVs Patriot was one of them that we thought of, however friend of mine did test drive, prefers Liberty over Patriot all because of space! I find it odd!

what about Chevy Tahoe or Subuaran??? or Dodge Ram

Dodge RAM is good for busines but why use it for home?

I believe Dixie care about good MPG. Chevy Tahoe and Subuaran are awful mpg.

:gpost: I have Dodge Ram with Thunder Road .. use for my horse, trailer, garden and my doggies! You know Dogs swim the lake and soak then let dogs a stay in the truck's bed! lol so

I used own Chevy Subuaran with 289K then trade Dodge.. LOVE IT!! :giggle: Hope after pay off my Dodge then kept it.. then Buy New Chevy tahoe or GMAC Yakon(spell)>>> will good MPG!! in future :):)

My friend has her jeep but total damage because She drove a simple curve from off the exit and rolling three times! But she is okay!

Just like what my DHB said...we love our Jeeps! I do drive on both, mine (Cherokee) and his (Wrangler). I like Wrangler cuz of topless and get some tan! LOL! Just kidding...Just feel good with the breeze but gas ouch!

We had no trouble with our Jeeps! We loved them to death and we would not trade to another SUVs. We thought of going for Tahoe or van or something that is suit for family but ended up with Cherokee when we traded in from our old 89 (I think) Blazer "Ladybug" to 98 "Midnight" (my Cherokee). Mine is still low mileage...around 97K now. Almost to 98. I probably will hit 100K later this summer :dunno:

So best is for you to go to the dealership and ask for a test drive. I am sure you will fell in love and so comfortable!

Good luck saving up and find a best SUV for you and your sweet girl!

WEll one of my coworker owned Grand Cherokee 1998 (130,000miles) and he have problem with it and it keep failed on emission and he already send it to autobody in few place and no one solve the problem so he trade it for Grand Cherokee 2003. Half year later it have problem with pulley so he send it to autobody for replace new pulley later it's break again. He is very angry and no more Jeep for him and he plan to sell it and buy Van when he become father soon.

Other coworker sold Grand Cherokee 2004 for Nissan Maxima SE 2007 which it's 40mpg and Grand Cherokee is 19mpg. She said Don't see any point why need 4WD for. There always snow plow anywhere on roads.

My friend own Jeep wrangler 1997 and he keep complained about gas all times since Chicago's price keep up. He sold it and bough Honda Accord 2007. He is very happy with good MPG. He own Jeep for almost five years.

Thinking about that.

Sweetheart's sister just got a Jeep Liberty few months ago. She said she liked it when she rode in her sister's new Liberty.

HA HA! You're funny! I am talking about the top of the Jeep :) We have hard top and soft top. So now we are using soft top for now till fall. We'll put hard top back on when cold weather hit in.

We take it off on sunny days. :) If rainy day, we put it back on (he or I).

You drive topless?! :eek3:

Whoa, that will give you some tan!

Just kidding back atcha!

I knew that; I was just teasing. :P

I used to have convertibles, so I know the joy of sunshine and wind while driving. (I had an original VW Bug rag top, and a Porsche 914 hard top convertible.) Our Commander isn't convertible but it has a nice sunroof that we can open. If I ever get a Patriot, I want to get one with the sunroof that opens.

Well, I had bad luck with Chevy already, probably never again wit Chevy, I gave up and got Jeep Wrangler, yes it is truly gas guzzler. The reason why I got this is because that wrangler got the engine that is known to last almost forever 4.0L and yes some Grand Cherokees have share of problems, Those with 4.0L seems to have far less problems than any other engines. I haven't found one Jeep Cherokee with so many problems. I heard not much problems with Patriots as well, the reason change to Cherokee to Patriot is that they have to quit that cast iron 4.0 engine, so they rename it to Liberty with Germany built engine.

Anyway, I really don't care about gas guzzling part because I got motorcycle that gets me over 40MPG, so I drive both thus reduce the gas spending. Both are fun to drive/ride!

Okay. I don't heard any problem from Wrangler engine so far. So Germany engine is better than American engine?

Some Germany engines are better than other Germany engines, so Im not sure yet, too early and haven't heard of any problem with Liberty 3.7L engine since it start production in 2002.

I've never driven any Jeep vehicles. I wouldn't mind trying to drive them sometimes.

I've rode the Cherokee and Wrangler, that's it.

I would rather have a truck such as a Dodge Ram Quadcab but thats out of my budget range for right now plus I need something thats gets good gas mileage as I plan on going back to school for a 2 year degree/certificate once I get it paid off and I will be putting alot of miles on it during that time. Then continue to drive it for a couple more years then use it to trade up to something I really want later on given I have no wrecks and I baby it really well.

The reason I want 4 WD option is so that I can go up and down the driveway safely when it ices over during ice storms in the winter. Its not so much the snow, its the ice that scares me. Because I live in extremely rural area and we only see snow once or twice a year we have no snow plows. I have thought about purchasing road chains for when it does get icy. I hate being stuck when the weather gets bad.

Does the Sport Liberty have 4 WD option? I would rather have cloth seats, leather is too much trouble plus within a few years it dries out cracks and looks like crap.
