American Idol Contestant has 90% Deafness

This information has most likely been posted before, but on the off chance it has not, I respectfully submit the following information:

American Idol final four finalist, Elliott Yamin, has 90% hearing loss in his right ear, as a result of childhood infections and illnesses. And yet, he will compete tomorrow evening with three others, with real world experience, to
stay.

I have not noticed if the show which airs on Tuesdays on Fox is close captioned or not. But, they do show the text message information that can be input, should you wish to vote for him. Unfortunately, this only applies to customers with text messaging enabled on AT&T or Cingular plans.

I invite you to watch this fine young man, who is such a wonderful role model to anyone else.

If this information is not appropriate for this forum, I do apologize, but I have been very moved by Mr. Elliott Yamin, his determination, singing skill and sensitivity is a tribute to this man who does not pity himself, he blames no one, and uses his wonderful gift to raise awareness of deafness and diabetes.

That's kinda neat, but on the other hand I think it would be even more amazing if he had BILATERAL LOSS!
 
Well, if I had known this, I wouldn't have voted for my look-alive (Kevin), who was voted off a number of weeks ago. First time I saw Kevin, I nearly fell over because his mannerisms were practically all my own!!

Uhhh, yeah—me too. :| Single-sided deafness can be a colossal pain in the ass, but it really doesn’t limit you that much. About the only things that a person with SSD can’t do are law enforcement, military combat, and jobs which require the ability to hear stereophonic seperation, such as working in a recording studio.

The stereophonic separation that you mention that is needed in recording studios....can you elaborate?

Elliott has had to record and sing "live" in this very environment that you say is challenging.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how he did that. I must admit that it would be pretty tough to be a musician with SSD. They must be mixing the sound so that it all comes through one channel.
 
Reminds me of an interesting story I once heard. Peter Wolf was forced to take a class in sound mixing when he was in cinematography school. He tried everything he could possibly think of to get out of it. He objected that not only was he was deaf and incapable of passing the class, the class would have no real benefit for him. But the school’s administration said tough shit—he had to take the class to graduate. So he took the class, and managed to navigate the entire course by looking at the occilloscope! In the end, he finished number one in the class!

That's incredible!! I imagine that there will be a lot more written about this after the show, but none of the contestant's even wear ear pieces to be able to know if they're keeping time with the band, so I guess that just makes me all the more impressed with Elliott.

I haven't been watching, but does he wear an in-ear monitor? I would think that could be a pain in the ass if he had to.
 
Wow!! that is amazing that he is partly deaf and be able to sing that well enough to the top of Idol!!

None of the contestants is allowed to wear an in-ear piece. However, some of us wondered if that would be a help......so apparently it would not.

I have been working with 40+ year-old women who feel the same way. There's a whole new group of people who are text messaging because of Elliott Yamin.

Looking forward to seeing him perform tonight.

SSD shouldn’t impair a person’s ability to sing. Tone deafness will prevent a person from singing, but that’s not really deafness—it’s a completely different type of neurological abnormality. I have SSD, but I am not tone deaf. I can reproduce a musical note with my voice and correctly match its frequency. The problem for me is that when listening to music, all the instruments blend together and I can’t really appreciate all the subtle nuances that stereophonic seperation provides. Which is why I am surprised that a person with SSD would pursue music as an occupation. It’s by no means impossible for a person with SSD to do so, but it would be like a person with one eye attempting landscape painting—his lack of depth perception would make it very difficult for him to accurately portray relative distance. I’ve never watched AI, but I think I’ll tune in for the rest of the season and see how this particular contestant does, and see if I can detect any difficulties he might be having because of his monaural hearing and what techniques he uses to compensate for it.
 
I knew about Elliott Yamin, its old news for me... Im a huge fan of Taylor Hicks.. I heard on fox news that one of the Contestant is coming back on american idol and that one of the Contestant quit AI.... I don't know who it is but I've been checking out on american idol boards...

From what I'm seeing on Ameican Idol it seems like that they don't want Taylor to win, they are wanting Chris to win..... But on the boards on American Idol they are saying that Chris is getting old with his "Rock" thing and they don't want him anymore. He nevers sings different types of music but only will sing Rock.. It's going back and forth on who is going to win and it's very confusing. I'm def taylors fan, even tho if he doesn't win by any chance, I will not be upset becasue he will sign a contract one way or another. I'm just glad that Kelli Pickler is out of American Idol, couldn't stand her dumb acting... She lives in NC where I live so does Chris I believe... Everyone here in NC is rooting for chris since he lives in NC... It makes me wanna barf, I love Taylor and I will root for him till the end... Elliot is a great singer too.. seems like a sweet guy! :) There is something about taylor that attracts me for some reason....I love his dancing...... whew!!! :bowdown: lol..Anyway who are you rooting for??

p.s. For all of you fans who love Taylor, he's adorable. In fact his fans are hoping for a "TH EY" final....get it? Taylor Hicks....Elliott Yamin final.
